Harsh or justified

Play silly games, win...well, you get the idea.

22kg is a ridiculous amount, valued anything from 100k - 250k, was he trying to start up his own empire over there?
Will just be some dunce who was promised loads of cash by someone much higher up the food chain.

Keeping up with the times?
Not sure about that with this case

Whilst other countries have studies the evidence and are liberalizing the use if cannabis - Cyprus are locking someone up for 12 years.
This may be true but 50lb of pot is a lot of pot to be smuggling into a country. Personally feel that guy is thick to ty to do this. What was he thinking? Pot is legal here in Canada but if your caught with 50lbs your going down.

Well the OPs question is was it harsh or justified? So no matter where he was it is ridiculously harsh. It’s like saying it’s justified that someone gets capital punishment for smuggling drugs into Singapore just because that’s their rules.

I walked across the border from Ukraine to Poland. All they cared about was cigarettes. I could have taken 20 tons of cocaine and they would even care.

It really doesn’t matter what our views are on Cannabis
Cyprus have laws
If you are going to smuggle something in to their country then you need to accept their consequences
And if you want to be gay in Saudi you face the consequences.

I just don’t think either of those are progressive and moving with the times

I don’t think they are the same and I don’t know of any gay people trying to benefit financially by breaking a law

1finny, do you mean are gay or happen to be gay in Saudi? It isn’t a lifestyle choice.

I was weirdly surprised at how easy it was to smuggle drugs from and to USA from Canada over the Rainbow Bridge on foot. I didn’t see any sniffer dogs, but no one checked my ruck sack or anything.

Good job as well since I had a $1m of heroin in there!

I did smuggle numerous rashers of bacon, into Libya, interleaved with greaseproof paper, between the pages of my Beano.

Sorry John - careless words from me
After years of thinking the opposite, I do agree with you

Of course you don’t think the same
Even tho you never mentioned financial benefit in your first post.
You merely said the law is the law

Lets go with the ‘financial benefit’ for the sake of the discussion
Person in USA commits a crime for financial benefit and gets the death penalty.

I don’t think that is progressive - albeit deserved with that legal system

If you want to throw your weight behind a harsh sentence abroad, it is the young 18 year old lad from London who was jailed for having sex with a girl aged 17. I am sure you are all aware of the story and I don't need to go into detail.

A 23 year old carrying drugs into a foreign country, no matter what classification they have in other countries, deserves everything he gets.

Stop being an ass
A 24 year old smuggling unlawful drugs into a country that has strict laws in place about that has nobody but himself to blame
We understand you think cannabis should be legal - maybe so maybe not but in Cyprus it’s not

Had a tense moment in Bali when two fellas in uniform asked me "are these your bags" then picked them up and walked straight to the front of queue with them at customs (my Mrs and her sister just stood helplessly watching as clueless as I was as to what was going on).

The Indonesians of course really don't **** about when it comes to drugs. All sorts was going through my mind, had someone planted something in my bags? I'll admit was slightly bricking it.

Turns out they were some sort of porter type fellas and were expecting a tip for carrying my bag and letting me jump the queue. FFS.

I’d have been bricking it too. You’re right. They don’t.

What, even if they have been manipulated and are vulnerable? Pretty harsh view to take without knowing exactly what has happened.

Given that he was found guilty of smuggling a significant amount (22kg) of cannabis into Cyprus, the 12-year sentence aligns with the country's strict drug laws. It may seem harsh to you compared to the UK, where cannabis laws are more lenient, Cyprus treats drug trafficking as a serious offense, with long sentences meant to deter others.

You've got to take into account that he was carrying a large amount of cannabis. 22kg isn't for personal use. Smuggling drugs across borders is seen as a major crime in just about every country and the one he chose to smuggle to has a tough stance on drug offenses.

If he was manipulated or coerced into smuggling the drugs that would be a significant factor in determining whether the sentence was harsh

However, the courts would require strong evidence of coercion or exploitation to reduce a sentence. Yet there is no mention of it in the article posted. Do you know something the courts don't know or are you jumping to conclusions as well?

I'm always sceptical whenever it involves drugs...because there's always someone higher up the chain than the individual who has been sentenced.

I fully agree with the sentence thrown at him, but who's told him to smuggle that amount of cocaine into the country? He's clearly the fall guy and the 'delivery boy' in this situation.
