Halifax Piece Hall

I remember seeing Crass at I think the Claremount (Liberal Club?) in Halifax in the early 1980s.
A mate and I had hitched down as Crass and Poison Girls were playing in Halifax one night and Bradford the next (or may have been the night before as memory is a bit faded)
The Halifax gig was great, but the Bradford one (at Queen's Hall???) had a load of skinheads there looking for punks from outside the area to have ago at.
We just escaped with our lives after some pretty hectic violence...then had to hitch back on I think what was a Bank Holiday weekend which resulted in walking about 40 miles and sleeping under hedges as nobody would stop for two scruffy punks who looked like they'd been sleeping under a hedge.
The Liberal Club was before my time of living in the area (I've lived in Halifax for 20 years but around Claremount for 7 years) and there are houses where that once was.
I'm a member of Belgrave Social Club on Claremount Road - 50p for 34 minutes on the very well conditioned snooker tables.
I've had a beer in Square Chapel but not coffeee. I quite like the Jamocha coffee shop in Halifax town centre.
A bit further afield, the Casa pub is a great place for a beer, particularly in the summer. A load of Boro fans from Billingham visited it before a couple of away games at Hudds back in the Karanka days.

Is it standing only?

Asking for an...ahem...old friend.

Actually, there are stone seats all the way around, but you'd have to be on the higher side of the venue to benefit. There are also a lot of long steps across the higher (west) side. They'd give you a decent view. You'd need to get in reasonably early to secure your spot. If you look on the Christmas market photo, you'll see some of the stone seats near the tree ... they have wooden tops. Those would give you a good (if distant) view of the stage from their elevated position. This photo shows the seating options on that elevated west side. You'd have a decent view of the stage from the seats on the immediate left.

There is also a raise "accessible" platform so, if you are going to a gig there, you could contact the Piece Hall in advance and ask about bringing a chair, as you have had health problems.

Cheers both. I wouldn't mind getting a ticket to see Crowded House, it's one band I've not seen and want to. There are tickets on the balconies which are nearly £90 pounds and there may be seats on there. GA is £55, but it looks like I'd have to get there early to be sure.

It's always been a brilliant building, if it was in a city it'd make a bomb. It just took the right vision and funding to get it where it is now. When it was still a bit ramshackle I tried to get the council to put Embrace on there in the late 90s but they couldn't strike a deal for whatever reason. Seen Low a couple of times in Halifax parish church just across the road and other gigs in the Square Chapel next door

(Local promoter) Michael's Parish Church gigs are amazing. Seen John Grant, Richard Dawson and Lisa On'Neil in there. So atmospheric. He actually promoted some gigs at the Piece Hall in the 90s. He put Pulp on if I recall correctly. Now he has moved the Grayston Unity to the Westgate quarter, he has a larger gig space, so I expect some great evenings in there in the future.

@Littlejimmy there's no seating on the balcony. There is the rail to lean on I guess. I struggle to see what the benefits are for the extra money you have to pay. I had balcony tickets for Elbow and although you get a good view if you're in the right spot, you do feel a bit detatched from the gig atmosphere. It has its own bar I believe, but in the main piazza, the bar is so well staffed and efficient that I have never had to queue, even at sell out shows.

Yes all 4 going on presale this morning. I suspect Underworld and Idles will be doing Glastonbury so will hold off although the former will be great in that venue.

Yep, I'm really tempted by IDLES, but I think we may be in Sweden then. So not buying tickets now. ... and I may have other means of being there.
