Its understandable to be fair.
The ending, in short, sees Di Caprio's character just wanting to live in the moment where his family was together again, before....well, you know the reality.
It's a great ending really, its effectively saying that his reality is the one that he experiences, whether its imagined or not.
Great concept and a bit of a mind fxxk!
