#goutlife

same here.

I thought I had broken my foot and big toe.

Since taking allopurinol I have not had a repeat performance.
The episode ended in hospital where they thought I'd sprained my ankle and told me to walk on it as much as I could bear. I tried this for about three days, trying to walk for an hour at a time.

Finally got in to see my long standing GP who said. That's gout. Don't walk on it!

Those 3 days were very long indeed 🙈😂

Yes.

You can miss the odd day if you've been taking then daily, but don't think you can stop taking them until you get an attack.
Its fascinating that you'd prefer to take a medicine rather than change your diet because obviously your nutritional intake is the cause of your gout. I've had it. Hated it. Got prescribed Allopurinol and certainly didn't want to be stuck on that for the rest of my days so changed my diet (or added blueberries) Even frozen blueberries with plant milk to make a smoothie each day. sorted and gives you vit C so helps keep colds etc at bay.

That's a sweeping statement Ex.
I changed my diet big time and still got a gout attack two or three times a year. Turns out I was unlucky and just produce too much bloody protein! Also ended up with kidney stones as well which is another thing I wouldnt wish on anyone.
I did everything by the book (except maybe alcohol but I cut that right down too) Now take Allopurinol and a nice medicine called Potassium Citrate to help with the protein imbalance.
If it keeps both at bay I'll happily take them until my time is up.

Oh and as an add on to that it's hereditary which makes sense as my dad suffered big time with kidney stones.

I tried really hard and completely changed my diet to avoid the tablets. After 4 months of a strict regime, I woke up on the morning of our summer holiday to a full blown attack.

What a carry on we had getting all our cases, and ourselves to the airport. I would love not to take the tablets - it really isn't an option for me, I don't think.

It's supposed to be horrible, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Great to read people looking at changing diet to help with symptoms going forward but I do find it weird with others who make no effort to see if a lifestyle change can help.

My mate has been through it and is on all sorts of medication. Had a bit of a scare last week (chest pain) so went to hospital.
He is now a bordering diabetic, and they want him to go back in Feb. His response was - that's great I can just crack on and eat, drink what I want til I go back.

Yes, he's overweight
No, he doesn't do any physical exercise
Yes, he eats meat for fun and is mad for 'rich food'

He's well educated has a wife who does all the right things for herself but he just won't go along.

Fortunately, we are off for a weekend to see another mate in December and I'll have him all to myself in the car for hours. Need to plan my approach.
He's 63 and I want him to stick around.

No-one really understands what brings gout on. The triggers are different for different people. Many people reckon cherries work for them and I don't dispute that for them, but for me cherries are a bloomin' trigger. It's about the one definite trigger I've figured out by a rigorous process of elimination. I have other triggers, but I don't know what they are.

Allopurinol has shown it can have some additional benefits eg lower blood pressure, anti-depressant properties, reduced chances of kidney stones. It can also have some additional negative side effects, so it's horses for courses.

I usually get an attack once a year always in my big toe. Might try allopurinol if it's effective. Usually naproxen sorts it but takes about 2/3 days plus the naproxen plays havoc with my stomache.

Blf, when you get an attack ask your GP for a tablet called Colchicine as these deal with the actual attack and Allopurinol basically stop any further episodes of gout.

Had gout for years, tried the diet changes etc etc but no improvement. Started on Colcochine and works for initial attacks but side effects were s***ing through the eye of a needle. Was then put on Alloprurinol but still had the odd attack. So in end put me on a drug called Febuxostat 5 yr ago and not had an attack since. Its expensive apparently but it works and they check my Uric acid levels yearly.
