Got myself a budgie on Sat

I can’t really offer any advice but this reminds me of my budgie Lemmy i had in the 80’s - he used to love head butting the bell on his mirror 😁 i don’t know if he just liked the noise or whether he was just bored or a bit mental but he was quite a character. He also liked to sit on my head an nibble my ear 🤪 if there’s any budgie physiologists on here I’d love to know your thoughts on his behaviour 😆

Add a little digestive biscuit and boiled egg white to his feed once per week (not too much) and it will brighten the colour of its feathers. Make sure it is all broken down into a crumb.

I have kept lots of birds and lots of parakeets and parrots. If you want your bird to be tame and easily handled start now.

As he is getting used to his environment, put a towel over most of the cage and put your hand in through the door and hold it still. Do this 3 or 4 times a day for a few days, maybe 3 or 4 days given it's a young bird.

Now with the towel still on the cage, move your hand towards the bird, slowly. If you place an index finger at the bottom of the birds belly, it will loose balance and step on to your finger. Don't prod the bird, hold your index finger out like you are pointing, but parallel to the floor and adjacent to the birds belly and move your finger slowly forward.

One the bird is on your hand do NOT overdo this, 2 or 3 times each day for 2 or 3 days.

Next do the same with the cage uncovered for a few days.

Space and environment allowing now take the bird out of the cage on your finger. The bird will be nervous at first and wont want to come out of its cage. persevere for a couple of days.

Afrter this ask again and I will point you in the right direction for getting it used to being touched and handled.

Parakeets are social animals so do not get another one until this one is finger tame.

On basic care, plain old budgie seed is fine, but they have prehensile tongues so each day blow the husks of the top of the seed tray. It will look full because they drop the husks back in the tray and eat the kernel.

They don't drink a lot but change the water every day.

They have continually growing top beaks so they need to have something to "cope" against. This wears the beak down. Cuttle fish is fine for this, but they like a reasonable sized twig or skinny branch to gnaw on.

Budgies have zygodactyl feet, 2 toes forward and 2 back. The perches that came with the cage are almost certainly round. Budgies prefer a slightly girthier perch that is oval, you may have to make these yourself with dowling.

I am not a budgie psychologist. However, I do have a biological background. If I was having a guess, from what you've said, I'd suspect that he was seeing a budgie reflection. The behaviour of Lemmy could have been some sort of dominance/territorial thing when he saw the 'other' budgie.

How annoying for him that it kept coming back for more. No wonder it drove him mental.

Howay Scoobs man, has he/she got a name?

Do we go Death Metal Guitar God or Boro Hero of yore? My pitches are

Azagthoth - great name for a budgie IMO but might cause you to spit over your new chum when calling him?

Emerson - most skilled Boro waster of all time.

Or you could just call him "Bob", whatever, I hope he brings you pleasure, companionship and fun.

I had a budgie for years when I was a kid.
My dad taught him to say "up the boro"
Was very tame, and used to sit on your shoulder and hand , we used to leave his cage door open quite often so he could fly around the room whenever he wanted.
