Good luck Emma 🇬🇧

Only unfortunate aspect is that she went to a selective grammar school instead of a Comprehensive.

And still, one of the commentators on the BBC News Channel last night says...'who'd have thought a girl from a grammar school could do that'

That quote alone illustrates what a sad country this is and why it needs flattening.
It really doesn't? Of all the things to focus on last night you focus on her education. How strange.

I really don't care with a British champion went to Eton or was raised by wolves. It's what they do in their sport that should count.

Something tells me that for all the girly smiles and the soundbites inside she's one tough cookie with a tremendous will to win.
Well yeah obviously

you don’t get to that level of sport without the willingness to win that most people don’t have inside them. It’s not just the talent and performance , it’s years of being a kid and sacrificing a lot of things such as going out with friends because you’re in practice most nights working hard.

nobody can do that without having a lot of mental toughness about them

One of the interesting things about Raducanu though, if you listen to some of her earlier interviews, is that she didn't do that, "nothing but the tennis" thing.

She kept her school friends, spent time with them on the evening, on weekends etc. Her parents apparently thought it was important that she have a balance between working hard at her craft, continuing with her education, and still having a normal childhood/social life, as much as possible.

Very commendable of them, I would say.

I watched it at the airport and like others my thoughts were that they were very well matched but Emma (perhaps) got the breaks as the Canadian fluffed her lines hitting too hard and not varying her game until it was too late. Incredible stuff really from the young two — Emma just doing enough to sew the seeds of doubt in her opponent’s offensive game and that was it. She (Emma) got tight late on — to be expected but you’d have to say she’s won a million hearts and many more in the bank after this famous win.

The scoreline doesn't really reflect how tight it was. Both rock solid big hitters from the baseline, I just think the Radster had the slight edge mentally and a bit of a better game plan. Fernandes had the benefit of being a lefty, always awkward, but Emma's coach is a lefty so that probably helped there a bit.

Her return game is already one of the best in the business, think that forced Fernandes to take a few more risks on second serve.

But what's frightening is I think Emma's serve will improve the next couple of years. It's already very good and she serves well on big points. But I think she should be able to up that ace count and win even more free points on serve with just marginal improvements to it.

If she can get to a point where she's cruising through her own service games and creating the daft number of break points on her opponents serve she does now, she'll be nigh on unstoppable.
