Golf GTD

Had anyone in here had one?

I'm thinking about getting one, I currently have a Scirocco R and well I'm quite frankly getting sick of 25mpg 😂

So, I'm looking towards a Golf GTD which will provide closer to 50mpg whilst doing everything I'd want.

Just wondering if anyone had had one and able to give it a brief review.

Please don't anyone tell me to get an EV... I have zero desire and nor the £40k required and I don't want a monthly payment.

I get 20 mpg from my car, I can only dream of 25 mpg and I have to run it on 97 Ron. That's about 169 a litre.

We had a Golf before our current car and the issues we had with the DPF (diesel particulate filter) were costly and a proper ball ache. Unless you are doing many miles every day I would personally avoid any car with a DPF like the plague.

What are you running now?

I was also just considering going back to a GTI but the mog advantage isn't that great really.

I had one about 5 years ago. It was a 16 plate so the MK7 version (think 2017 was the MK7.5 face-lift).

I bought it when I got back from deployment so saved a few quid. I absolutely loved it. It had all the 'gadgets' and adaptive cruise control and collision assist etc. The build quality is superb.

I think I got mid 50s mpg. The engine pulls like a train as 180bhp. It's more the mid range torque as diesel. A really nice car and a nice alternative to the GTI. I had it for 2 years and sold for something more 'sensible'. They also retain value well.

I probably travelled around 30 miles a day so had no DPF issues. Its definitely worth thinking about if only doing low mileage.

They are usually 'fine' but need a good blowout over distance and speed. Definitely not designed for stop - start City driving. Also usually not covered under warranty as issues tend to come from drivers buying them without knowing what a DPF is or how you need to use the car to keep it issue free. Again don't buy if doing 3 miles a day in a city 😂.

Also maybe a cheaper option but with the exact same engine is a Skoda Octavia Vrs or Seat Leon.....all VAG 👍

I thoroughly recommend a kia stinger

We/my wife has an 18 plate 2ltr, pulls like a train and great build quality. Will do 300 mile of mostly motorway driving on just over half a tank. As already said it would be wasted on a daily commute from Marton to down town.

Skoda Octavia 1.5 TSI petrol. Loads of kit on it too. It's one down from the VRS basically which I would have bought in a heartbeat, especially after taking one out for a test drive, but the funds at the time didn't allow it. Will definitely be looking at the VRS hyrbid as our next car.

Do you get a lifetime supply of engine oil as an optional extra when you buy an RX-8? 😏
They don't actually burn much oil. It costs me about 10 quid every 8 months.

Servicing is a much bigger cost. The spark plugs are about 150 quid.

An engine rebuild for 2 grand every 70k miles is another big cost if its your daily runner.

They are crap cars in almost every way except one, they drive beautifully.

I have an 18 plate 2.0 Diesel GT, the one down from the GTD, been a really good car. I’m at 95k now and out side of tyres and servicing it’s only had a set of break pads and a rear wiper everything else is still original. I have the Auto one and the only thing I dont like is the DSG box is rubbish in snow and ice as you can’t force it to change up a gear to help with traction. It wont let you.

Yeah I'd have no issue giving it a blast out!

I've had DSG on my old GTI and my current R. I do love it apart from in the snow/ ice as you say.

I had one for a year. Its just a Golf with a fancy hybrid bit but its still a good car. I've also had 2 MK7 GTI's and frankly they are the best car I've ever owned. I'm not a fan of diesels in sporty hatchbacks.
