Give Gareth 4 more years

I would agree as there’s no natural successor but there seems to be a lot of people who want him out now and I don’t think he’ll want to carry on anymore as he knows that, so I think he’ll go after this tournament. He doesn’t deserve the abuse he’s been getting in certain quarters after what he has done for and how he has reshaped English footy across all age levels. Still, such is the entitlement of many in this country, they won’t be happy til we’ve won several tournaments on the bounce, winning every game 5-0. (And by then they’ll be whinging it wasn’t by 10).

When Gareth does go, the next appointment is absolutely critical. Whoever it is must not undo all that he has done.

I get the feeling we may look back on his tenure very fondly when we potentially regress under the next guy - let’s be honest who can we pick, no obvious candidate.. Let’s hope we can look back fondly while still progressing. 🤞

No natural successor?

There's loads of people who failed at club management.

If we win it, give him the world cup run.. if we're out, he goes..

We are massively underperforming & can hardly pass the ball, however we're still in it & that resilience is a positive that Southgate has brought..

He needs, to turn it into a win over Netherlands & probably the best team - by far - in the competition Spain..

I watched the post match presser last night. Southgate seemed snappy in his responses and also alluding to having to find some enjoyment in the job. I think he’s spent now.

I think he should go regardless. Leave on a high note or bow out before people come with the pitchforks.

I’ve not enjoyed the football this tournament but over his reign he’s managed to get the best England results of my lifetime.

It’s incredibly easy to be negative in life. For some people it’s almost a comfort. It’s much better to try and see the positives. There’s been a lot under Gareth for England at all levels.

I’d also argue that GS (who finished 12th and 14th in his first 2 seasons as Boro manager) was badly let down by Gibson with regards to who we sold and who we replaced them with.

Still, negativity 👍

I certainly would not argue that we are playing well, we are not clicking, it’s true. I’d say this is the first time under Gareth we haven’t performed consistently well but we are still in there fighting. I think he deserves far more respect for the bigger picture he’s produced than what he is getting for a stuttering tournament where we’ve reached the semi finals. 1 final, 2 semis and a QF in 4 tournaments is not a bad record at all. Undoubtedly we should’ve won the 1 final we got to and arguably should have reached 1 of the others (probably 2018) but it’s still a great record compared to all the other managers we’ve had bar 1 and during this time he has totally changed our footballing ethos and identity. I can’t believe some people are unable to take positives from that.

Southgate will go after the tournament win or lose. To be honest can you blame him?

We are in another semi-final and words used to describe him include clown and idiot. Why would he stay, he has nothing to prove and will leave the England national team in a much better state than he found it.

In an ideal world we would win this tournament, he'd leave football management behind and move into FA leadership and representing our country in organisations like UEFA and FIFA, but he has too many morals to step foot in that corruption-riddled place.

Regardless of frustration with the style of play, he is a magnificent ambassador for the game and I really do hope that the FA keep him within the organisation because under his tenure it seems that England are properly organised. There has been quite a turnover of players since he started, but the culture seems to have been embedded: that is very difficult at club level, nevermind international.

The criticism of his coaching has been way over the top.

I think the standard of international football is more competitive than ever. Pretty much every nation is well coached and stocked with talented players plying their trade in the top domestic leagues.

Hope the 'failed Middlesbrough manager' gets to experience the elation of leading England to a major tournament win before time is called on his management.
