Give a Coat a Home is back for a second year to help people stay warm as the cost of living crisis bites over the winter months.

Used coats are currently being collected across Middlesbrough, before being handed out to those in need at a special event next month.

The initiative is again being led by Linthorpe ward Councillor Philippa Storey and Newport ward Councillor Chris Cooke, with soaring bills leaving many struggling to be able to afford to heat their homes.

A one-off event on Saturday, October 8 will see the coats distributed to those calling in at the Pop-up Coat Shop at Newport Community Hub on St Paul’s Road.

They’ll be available to anyone who needs one, with coats arranged in age groups.

Members of the public are invited to donate unwanted coats in good condition ahead of the event allow time for them to be sorted.

The donation points are:

The Dorman Museum
Newport Community Hub
Unite the Union offices, Fry Street (next to Jury’s Inn)
Linthorpe
(details on request)
Easterside (details on request)

Benefit advice and free tea and coffee will be available at the event.

Councillor Philippa Storey said: “The cost of living crisis and huge rises in utility bills make it more important than ever that everyone has access to a warm winter coat.

“Most of us take it for granted that we can wrap up warm when temperatures start to fall, but not everyone is so lucky.

“People are facing real hardship especially over the winter months, but no-one should have to make choice between eating and staying warm.

“There are countless coats out there that are simply going unused, so Give a Coat a Home is a chance for those who might be struggling to pick up a pre-loved coat in excellent condition for free.”

It must be two years ago now that the Clothing Bank closed down in Middlesbrough. This was every Monday night when an industrial container of donated men's and women's clothes was opened. The queue was so long it was a very sad sight. I had taken a bag of old coats and I related this to you at the time what the helpers told me. They opened the container and pointed to a rail running from one side to the other and told me that empty rail had been full of coats but within little over an hour was completely emptied. Such was the demand. That was weekly at that time. And that was before lock down.
If you are around Middlesbrough and have any coats you no longer wear then they could keep someone warm this winter. Just take it along to one of the above donation points spread across Middlesbrough.

Rob can I ask you a favour and hoof this after the 28th. I have loads of coats I can donate some never ever worn.
I am away until 28th so would probably forget it by then.

One question though are all these coats going to people who want them and not sold and then a donation made to Charity like those plastic bags that come through the door.

Great idea this. Never seen it previously.

All the coats go to people who really need them. Very timely just before winter bites.
It would be great if people kept hoofing and donating. It will really help.

It's a pity there's no place central in the town centre or somewhere you could just park and drop off like a bin at Sainsbury's car park near the bus station I had to Google the unite offices and I don't know any of the other locations. It's a fantastic cause all the same are you looking for kids coats as well

I was told yesterday that there is a massive collection already of coats.
Please do keep giving this week - ahead of Saturday when they will be distributed to those in real need.

Another last push for this - if you have any coats that you won't be wearing this winter - then please do think about donating them for someone to keep warm.
