Getting comfortable with the reality of being a Boro Fan

I get more frustrated with results when we have thrown away games like QPR for example. If we play s**t and lose then I forget about it.
With transfer signings I take no stock in what they did at their last club or if they are from South America. I just want them to play well for the Boro, I don't care if they were s**t or fantastic at their previous club.

I go to watch the Boro win. I take all the bad results and disappointment because when you get the rare moments like Forshaw against Reading I honestly don't believe you could feel the extreme elation and joy from anything else.

I have supported Boro since my Dad sat me on the crush? barriers in the Cemetry End. I then graduated to the Boys Pen and by the skin of my teeth fought my way in for the Oxford game. Deserted by my father as he had to fight his way in as well.
I live in York now. But lived all over the country, had season ticket 1996-2006. Got one again now,
Went to Lisbon, Rome, Eindhoven and all finals, including Zenith Data Cup.

Boro are a drug. And by the way have one spare ticket, cost £15 for Blackburn game

His financial backing is incredible, but a large part of why we are where we are, and why we have fallen so far behind is the succession of poor decisions Gibson’s made.

We should have never appointed Southgate then.

We should never have sacked him when we did.

We should never have appointed Strachan.

We should have backed Mowbray.

We should have moved heaven and earth to keep Aitor. The one manager who’s brought us any joy.

Monk & Pulis shocking, then Woodgate.

That’s one decision he’s got right in the last what, 15 years?

My Boro history is above.
BUT as you allude to. He has kept the club going for 35 years through thick and thin.
He is around my age and has probably wasted enough money.
Thank you Sir Steve.

Succession planning needed, or sell out to Chinese, Americans, Indians?

Same applies to Wanock sucession, I really pray this is being worked on,

Pretty much nailed it there.👍

Look no further than the state of our finances - as I told you last time - remember? Managerial choice, pricing policy, a dictator run club, a club that offers little/ zero lace for financial investment, an apparent lack of any coherent plan, failure to organise a business plan that never remotely looks like working ( only time we have achieved a modest profit was our disastrous stay in the Prem - this enough for now?
Dictator run club - are you for real?

Cannot fault Sir Steve. But we cannot rely on him anymore.
Need new finances.
Which means loss of local leadership and someone/corporate organisations that do not understand the club.

It happens everywher but if it is organised now maybe a good partner can be found - as in ICI and Newcy Brown Brewery in the past.

Agree with newyddion. Another year of obscruity like a omfortable pair of old trainers. nothing to excite me. Apart from mid table. how do we break out of this and move on?

My OP wasn’t a moan or complaint - it was simply a reflection on how far my personal expectations for the club have fallen and how accepting I have become of this. I don’t really blame anyone - we have just drifted here over time and seem to have become comfortable and stuck as a mid table second tier club - some fans would welcome this (the Mackams for one at the minute) so perhaps we should just be grateful for what we have?
No I absolutely am not grateful for what we have.
Top 20 league standing, top 20 attendance average across history.
We have only been lower than we are for two seasons in our history, we have been above where we are so many times.
5 years ago we started in the PL with a chance. I am not grateful at all for what has happened since.

In my opinion there are two things which set teams apart. Money or a clear long-term strategy.

We had the former and wasted it (which is why we are where we are) but these last few weeks feel like the latter is finally coming to fruition with the appointment of Scott.

This season feels like a free hit. A proven manager in this division who is being given some backing for one last shot at glory. If it doesn't work we should have solid foundations for the future in place this time next year.

It's why the Kenyon, Orta, Karanka thing was so frustrating. That felt like an opportunity to get an edge on our rivals with a long term plan but we binned it far too quickly imo. In the absence of cash, patience and intelligence are probably our only real assets.

Still got hopes we will win something and get into Europe, doubtful but you need to have that hope if nothing else.

Realistically I just want to see the club actually showing some ambition, I don’t mean going and spending 10 million on players as I accept we just can’t do that, but just looking for players who want to be here and will do everything to improve themselves and the team, and a manager who will actually look to improve the long term future of the club and playing something that’s actually going to get fans excited

We seem a million miles from that at the moment and I really feel my interest in the club is an all time low. Was really looking forward to getting back into the ground but as it stands I doubt I will go to many games this season, enjoyment just isn’t there, would rather be attending other games on a Saturday as it stands

I don't enjoy our current predicament and Im not a big fan of our current manager either. I have hope rather than expectation but I still enjoy going to matches for "the moment". if you only go when things are going well and winning then the Club would get no fans.

I agree with some of your post, but Christ, you'd rather be at different matches after going back this season.
Both matches have been decent at The Riverside to watch and the atmosphere has been great. I couldn't be anywhere else.

I’m gutted I feel that way to be honest, I’ve spent thousands over the years following the team home and away, had a good few years when I barely missed a game but the enjoyments just not there at the moment. Just very frustrating feeling like the club are just happy to make the same mistakes over and over with not any real effort to change things

It was, and it was great to be back, but it’s difficult to be up for another championship mid table battle which it’s already starting to feel like.

Still a bit sickened from our relegation, never felt the same since then, thought that was going to be a real turning point for the club and we blew it through awful management from those at the top

You would probably find Arsenal fans with the same sentiments. Financial prudence becomes 'lack of ambition' etc.

Lots of plus points so far for me. Love the Uche up front - great to see a centre forward interested and putting himself about. Looking forward to him giving Ayala some on Saturday. Like Crooks another grafter and also Jones - most exciting player we have had since Traore. Enjoyed the Fulham game - getting a deserved but unexpected draw helped. Not happy NW used the Blackpool game to make his point knowing 2000 plus fans travelled. The first home game was a real feel good atmosphere and one of them days that gets your hopes going - got to say Bristol were very poor. It wasn’t the result against QPR that upset me - we have no divine right to win it was the fact they were so much better than us, fast accurate passing, good movement - always looking for a positive pass - everything we weren’t on the day. The Derby game just reinforced the blindingly obvious - it’s going to be another season of highs and lows, inconsistency and ultimately acceptance of our place at the moment - a mid table Championship side. Will still enjoy the atmosphere and build up to the game and support the players as I think this squad does put a shift in but we are limited by a lack of real quality. As I say probably as good as we can expect at the moment.

The main thing I want when I'm going to a match is that no matter who we are playing that I have some confidence that we could win. In the championship, I always have that confidence. And yes I want to see us win as much as possible and that would inevitably lead to promotion.

Last time we were in the premier league, I went to matches with little to no hope. If we got promoted we would be in exactly the same situation. Even in the wildest of dreams and we stayed up, we would become a mid-to-lower half team waiting for a bad year to get relegated like Newcastle, Burnley, Brighton etc. I don't go to see Man Utd and Chelsea and all their fancy players. I go to see us win .

I'm sure Norwich fans are loving the Premier League.

We have to roll the dice.. we get it right more often than our peers. Sunderland and Newcastle for instance.

Norwich had an incredible season last year off the back of relegation, played some great football and attracted some really exciting players to their club. I would take one season of relegation if it resulted in that.

Its not automatic loosing every week and certain relegation though, look at Burnley. They went from the same position as us to a great finish and playing in Europe, same with Southampton, Wigan won the FA cup, Swansea and Birmingham won the league cup. Leicester even won the league. Clubs that are run well can thrive when they are promoted its very difficult but not impossible for clubs of this size to compete
