George Reynolds has cracked his last safe

Good read that Rob.

Maybe apart from when Notts County had Sven and Sol Campbell, or Newcastle’s Saudi trillionaire sheikover when they really thought they were going to sign Mbappe, I can’t think of a bigger white elephant in the history of football than what happened to Darlo.

That stadium with just a couple of thousand fans in, and then being abandoned, was truly shocking.

He was not a character, or a nice benevolent father figure to the people of Shildon. More a paranoid obsessive who liked to throw his (and his employees) weight around.
Luckily I didn't lose any money at the Shildon site or the football ground, but many did.
His hair and application of hair grips, to evenly distribute it around his bald head, was an engineering marvel, though.

Just read that article. I bet David Preece can't wait to take a solo trip to the cemetery where George gets buried, with a full bladder...

Marmite my @r$e!

Darlo council well & truly shafted him with that stadium he told them he was going to live there & hold car boot, concerts etc thats why he went ahead & built it once it was built they knocked him back for everything trays why he was done for harassing the councillor blamed him for the lot.
Darlo planning totally shafted Darlo FC 25,000 seater stadium restricted to 10,000 - could have been a very interesting time having a chairman mad enough to take it on. they were in and around the Champo at one point that extra revenue could have kept them there and even beyond! an absolute crying shame.

It was as let’s not forget they were never relegated through football results every demotion they endured was down to off the field activity.

it’s truly shocking what happened to darlo.

Talking to a lawyer who represented him on, er, several occasions. Concur with Hap. He wasn't a lovable rogue. He was just a rogue. And a very, very unpleasant one. I'd be more impressed if I knew he'd paid the mortgages with legitimate money. Absolute first class horrible tw@.
This. Got away with a lot more than he ever got convicted for.... and did a lot of very nasty things to many people.

After they'd retired, my old folks volunteered for the witness protection programme at Teesside Crown Court - basically meeting and greeting people, making them comfortable etc - and were there when he turned up to be tried, in full mocked-up prisoner outfit, with arrows. They said he loved the attention.

Can't believe people are blaming the council/planning for the way that crook destroyed a town's football club.

saying that.. who wants another north east team battling us for the signatures of Max Hass and Adam Hammill?!?!?

post reynolds maybe? unless the guy still owned the stadium I guess

Sounds like Mrs Foggy on her way to go clothes shopping...
I honestly can't imagine anything more stressful than being out and about with £500k in my physical possession knowing that if someone pulls a knife on you its all gone forever.

Mind you, I bet he had a knife or two in the car as well. Wouldn't be surprised if he's used one in the past either, probably more than once!

No, the stadium was restricted to 10k because it wasn't finished, it wasn't safe for 25k. It hardly mattered as I think the most the football club ever had in there would have been 6 or 7k for a friendly with us, Sunlun or Jawdies? I think it was finally given a licence to hold 25k for the visit of Elton John?

The stadium now is decaying, the rugby club bought it with a dream of bringing permiership rugby to the town. They had a windfall of moolah from selling the site of their former ground in the "nicest" residential area of Darlington (West End) for housing and have proceeded to p!ss most of it up the wall on a few foreign mercenaries for the first team. They are still nowhere near getting to the premiership and the money is mostly gone. The paint is peeling off the roof girders and the offices are (I'm told) cold and tatty having been done on the cheap. And their attendances for egg chasing have never amounted to more than family and friends of the players. Unless they come up with some form of sponsor (perhaps HM Treasury 😉 ) they will run out of money in less than five years and who will want that folly next? I think the football club are considering moving back in conjunction with the rugby club but IMO they would be better advised to stay well away from it.

I can't see it ending up any different to Rushden and Diamonds to be honest, eventually.

Met him a couple of times and found him a bully, But my son on his first outing as a ref, ran the line at Feethams for a under 16 match against Sunderland . George thanked him and thrust £20 in his hand not bad for a lad of 15 especially as a ref i got £15 Still didn,t trust him one inch

Here is a blog written by his former Darlo keeper David Preece that says a lot about George Reynolds. Taken from The Tin Shed Message Board
"Let him rot in the reserves?" What a total blag! Saying he would have chucked £300k away just on the chance he could rip off of a 24 year old free transfer out of £45k

Raj Singh wanted to redevelop the surround land into some sort of retail park but couldn't because the land is only designated for sporting use.
Under the un used stands there are boxing gyms and CrossFit gyms (used to be) which are pretty nifty. Mowden Park have done a decent job with what they had to work with and to me at least it would make sense to the stadium to be shared with the football club. Hopefully whatever happens they can make the most of what could be a real asset to the area.. it's defo in need of a sprucing up to say the least which might be able to be done in the form of grants.

What even needs to be done to get it safe/suitable for a 25k seater stadium need to be done.. then that needs to be done. Otherwise it's just going to be a weight round the neck for whoever is involved with it.
