Aged 85. Just being reported on Tyne Tees news
Agree - definitely marmite. As mentioned on the news, you either liked him or hated him.
I remember the story of how he was sat in a bank managers office and couldn't concentrate on what he was saying due to looking at the safe. The man was a rogue who brought misery on many and more recently was given jail for tax evasion. The same man paid off some of his staffs mortgages and I am sure them people will have a different view to most..
He didn't Norman- that was a publicity stunt. As mentioned on the news, you either liked him or hated him.

What, the mortgages was a publicity stunt? Just quoting what Tyne Tees said, I wouldn't put it past him.He didn't Norman- that was a publicity stunt.
Very interesting that, Rob. Thanks for posting. Here is a blog written by his former Darlo keeper David Preece that says a lot about George Reynolds. Taken from The Tin Shed Message Board

Yes Norman. I used to drink in the Arden Street club when I lived in Darlington. I knew a few people who knew George well. While it's true that he paid the mortgage off for 2 of his employees he actually kept the deeds to the houses. The deeds were in his name. What, the mortgages was a publicity stunt? Darlo council well & truly shafted him with that stadium he told them he was going to live there & hold car boot, concerts etc thats why he went ahead & built it once it was built they knocked him back for everything trays why he was done for harassing the councillor blamed him for the lot.Bent as a shepherd's crook. Ripped off a lot of small businesses when building that white elephant of a stadium. Nothing loveable about him.
I can remember that (players walking out) getting reported in the locals.Yes Norman. I used to drink in the Arden Street club when I lived in Darlington. I knew a few people who knew George well. I know a couple more stories about him
When he was at Darlington there was a meeting held at the cricket club. His wife Susan, stood up on the stage and publicly accused Darlington players of accepting bribes to throw games. This, according to her, was the reason Darlo were in so much debt. She went on to say that her husband George would sort out the players and buy a new ground. The players, to a man, stood up and without a word, walked out of the the room to tremendous applause. Susan was booed off the stage.
Good article that. The owld feller knew him way way back in the day and told a couple of interesting tales that don’t need repeating. However since they’re both dead now I will say the owld feller had some tales about George’s safecracking, being a bit of a nasty piece of work and thick as pigshït - that’s according to the owld feller anyway and he never told a lie. Here is a blog written by his former Darlo keeper David Preece that says a lot about George Reynolds.
