George Floyd

Case starts this week - will make for interesting TV. Seems the defence is that the officer was doing his job and his death is down to health conditions and drugs! Tipping point for America this one, if cleared How can any black Person have faith in the police or justice system.
Trip is due to last for 4 weeks.

If he’s found not guilty it’ll make the Rodney King riots seem like nothing. I’d expect the BLM activists to kick off over here too.

No winners in this case... There is enough doubt in the PM for the officer to be cleared... that being said the smirk on the guy's face as he was kneeling on him told you everything you need to know.

im sure he will be convicted for something... but can't see it being Murder.

I'd read that Floyd and the copper who killed him knew each other from previous encounters when Floyd was a bouncer?

Could of course be the internet been the internet.

The coroner noted the other issues such as medical condition etc but ruled the cause of death was asphyxiation I believe so that is going to be a tough sell.

This is America though and he is a cop, you don't see many convictions or even trial with their qualified immunity. My gut says he will get off with the second-degree murder charge and will likely be convicted of 3rd-degree murder or manslaughter.

I have avoided the video till an hour ago when it was on Sky news, turned over to BBC news and it was on there as well. It was sickening to watch.
It is horrific and it is murder plain and simple, ignorance is no defence. There were 4 cops one unarmed and handcuffed black guy, nothing they did was necessary. That man died because one cop was flexing and showing his prejudice and the others allowed it to happen. If that was 4 random black guys with one of them kneeling on a victim, they would all be on trial together, the fact he is up there alone is another travesty of this case.

Watching it now bear, it makes uncomfortable viewing and you cannot help but feel for the man and empathise with his last few minutes of life.

Whether Chavin is guilty or not, I don't know, I will probably watch the whole trial. I noted that the jury is predominantly white though, which I find interesting.

Foe people saying it is murder pure and simple, perhaps watch the trial then make your mind up.

I saw a news article a month or so ago which showed the Minneapolis Police Departments procedures and it had a photo of a cop placing his knee on the neck of a suspect

He will get off with it as he 'followed' procedures - that's what his lawyers will argue

I didn’t fully appreciate that and I can’t agree more. Given the US has the law of “joint enterprise”that can see you responsible for murder even if you never left the car and just dropped a friend off to commit a crime - then how can this be so for these police officers! It’s certainly going to be gripping for all the wrong reasons.

It's not procedue and the prosecution have a witness, the man who trains the minneapolis police on arrest and restraint. They are trained not to put any pressure on above the soldierr, and may only lay a suspect prone for the time it takes to get him restrained. George Floyd was already restrained.

Joint enterprise is only applicable if another crime is being committed, if 4 black guys stood around and watched another black guy muder someone, providing they do not encourage the crime, they have committed no crime themselves.

I tell you what when he gets sent down which either way he’s going to be , he won’t last two minutes in jail . He’s basically doomed

He’s going down, which is probably the correct outcome.

I don’t think the government would countenance the fall out which would come from any other outcome.

Not sure how much the government can effect the trial to be honest. The judge cerrtainly can, but I don't see how the goverrnment can

I can't claim to know anything about US legislation, but I very much doubt he'd be convicted of murder here, as unpalatable as that may seem having watched the video.

I'm sure America is bracing itself, regardless of the outcome.
