Gazza

I didn't know England are playing tonight until I read this thread.

I saw a picture of Gazza in the paper and his face looked bloated in a bad way.

I didn't really take an interest in football to quite late(compared to others) I was about 10 when I got really into football so around 1994. Euro 96 was the first major tournament I remember England being in and I still remember Gazza scoring that goal against Scotland like it was last year, it might be that I was young but he seemed magic that tournament and my limited experience of football at that time I had never seen anything like it, I also remember watching the penalties and crying when we got knocked out.
When Boro signed him only a couple of years after that tournament it was unreal, the cheeky grin and such natural footballing talent, it's horrible seeing him like this now, he is relatively young and it really is horrible seeing one of my childhood sporting heroes like he is now.
I would much rather remember him as my childhood hero of Euro 96 and the excitement when we signed him than see him trending on twitter and people mocking him on there.

I'm the same but it was Italia 90 for me. Absolutely incredible footballer on his day and I think most of the nation loved the lad after that tournament

Yep, I had a passing interest in football in 89/90 but it was Gazza’s tears at the age of 8 that made me fanatical and in truth he has shaped my life in some way. My Dad was worried I was starting to be a Spurs fan so he took me to Ayresome Park and I was just hooked, 33 years and counting. I too loved it when he signed for Boro and actually think he did ok in his first season.

My mate met him at a junior football match recently and showed me the pictures, looks like he’s had a major relapse, but it happens every year or two and then he goes into rehab, gets clean, does another after dinner circuit then the cycle just repeats. What is encouraging is that he does seem to have quite lengthy sober spells which must at least give his body a break. The worry is that he eventually just stops trying of course.

I was at OT tonight actually. 6 year old son enjoyed all the goals.
