Gambling Addiction

Even as a person who has put my family in financial difficulty many times due to gambling, as someone who has almost lost my family numerous times, someone who is still paying debts off and will be for years due to gambling, as someone who has considered suicide many times due to gambling, I still don't think there should be a blanket ban on online gambling.

I do think advertising gambling should be banned including TV, radio, in stadiums and on shirts.

I do think gambling should be banned anywhere children are present. So if a pub allows children, there should be no fruit machines etc. If a sports stadium allows children in, then there shouldn't be bookies in the concourse. As someone who attends groups with other like minded people, gambling habits are often formed during childhood.

Online slots, casinos etc should be banned along with the machines in bookies.
Admire your brutally honest and frank admission. Good luck with your battle👍

Just playing devil's advocate, though......... there must be hundreds of everyday things that are addictive. Do we ban advertising on them all?
I think we probably should. Advertising has a lot to answer for. People and society are primed to buy **** they don’t need. That is at the detriment of the planet and society in general.

The biggest issue in the uk and it’s largely a uk issue you don’t get it in Europe the us etc is that we have normalised gambling that has for centuries been viewed as a vice.

But today as others have said it’s seen as part of the high street part of your apps on your phone a “safe” and harmless past time that is incredibly addictive and also incredibly harmful directly and indirectly leading to spousal abuse and other crimes.

But how many can be done 24/7 in your own pocket directly linked to your bank account.

Gambling is so dangerous as you do it with no interaction with others unlike drinking where you physically have to obtain it.
That's a very pertinent point......which leads back to being able to "control" gambling by reverting back to good old fashioned bookies.

Wanna bet? Go to the bookies. What's that, it's 3am and despite your desperation to put £20 on a China Pub League game and bookies don't open until 9:00?..........

I think if there was national vote to ban gambling advertising in sport, then surely the outcome would be an overwhelming result for a ban or more severe restrictions, especially around youngsters. I don't gamble on sport, but regularly play the weekly national lottery which benefits charities and good causes, but the sport gambling apps only benefit the shareholders, Doesn't the lady who own Bet 365 earn £365m per year from people using her gambling platform. There needs to be tighter control, most know that, so why won't successive government's legislate against so much advertising?

EDIT: I believe that sport gambling in the US can only be done at live sporting venues. There are no betting shops, or "spot" betting facilities.

Following Blair's Gambling Act regulatory authorities were required to “aim to permit” gambling: instead of putting the onus on gambling firms to justify why more premises or operators were needed, it forced licensing authorities to justify why they weren’t, and made it very difficult to do so.
One of Labour’s worst moves in my opinion. Didn’t the Blair government push for massive casinos too? I seem to remember one being suggested for Teesside.

There are worse advertisements than gambling sites.
Annual Obesity cost to the NHS 6.5 Billion per year, 27% of UK are obese and 68.3% of adults are overweight, heading towards Obesity, that's not including the overweight children.
Yet they advertise, Just Eat, Mcdonalds, Kentucky FC, and other fast junk food, daily.
This has now overtaken cancers in smokers as the biggest killer in the UK.

But Hey ho!! we cant say anything, because that's fat shaming..

Okay, so both are bad?
What a weird post.

I’ve seen gambling ruin and take the lives of people, it’s as bad, if not worse than alcohol and drugs and isn’t treated with the respect that is needed.

When I was serving I remember it being an epidemic amongst serving personnel. I’m not sure what it’s like these days but I imagine it’s only gotten worse.

Why is that weird? people are saying stop advertising gambling, because of addictive gamblers, all im saying is there's worse advertisements.
Junk food adverts should be banned, when there's so many unhealthy people in the country, that puts more strain on our NHS than gambling addicts.
6,5 Billion pounds wasted on poor diets and health and it's only going to get worse, unless something is done about it.

Because it's all about cost to the NHS and not about the gambling addicts who ruin themselves financially or families that are pulled apart through the poor decisions gamblers make or the suicides that occur through gambling addiction.
Talk about missing the bigger picture

🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Anything that has a negative impact on the populace should indeed be banned from advertisement.

Other things that are addictive such as physical exercise shouldn’t be banned.

I’m not sure what @Support Your Local Team point is here.

Well, I suppose I am asking why ban someting that some can't control themselves with but the majority can. But people have pointed out it's about advertising so I can see why some are banned.

But food? Many people ruin their lives with food (we are an obese nation) so do we ban all food being advertised? Alcohol?

Lots of people are addicted to just spending money on things like clothes and material possessions and ruin their lives with the resulting debts. Do we ban advertising them?

I suppose I am just wondering where it all stops. Not necessarily disagreeing with any points that anybody has made.

If online gambling is so much worse because you simply link you bank account to the vice and sit and blow your money so quickly then why ban advertising it? Why not ban online gambling full stop?
