Gambling Addiction

It's too easy now. One click on your smart phone and there you are. All of the offers/free bets etc.

It's the reason I still do it the old school way and go to the betting shop. I really feel for people who are severely addicted to gambling but I can see why the numbers are higher now than ever before.
That is a massive part of it. It is way too easy for someone to get hooked because of technology.

I’ve said on here before I am fortunate to have no interest in gambling, but can totally see how it consumes others.

When I went to vegas in 2001 I saw a slot machine where you put your credit card in and played with that so you were playing with money you didn’t have at the time this horrified me as you had no idea how. Much you’d spent but that is now in every phone in Britain

This is different though as it’s a us company using us stars because there no way they could do that in the states so Chris Rock as with any other American won’t have seen a bookies or even grasp the concept of uk style betting

as to them it’s all high end sports books in Vegas or Atlantic city filled with glitz and glamour.
Keith Lemon, Ray Winstone......sure they know full well the damage gambling can do but they are happy to take the £££££.

The person who runs my local use to work in a bookies. The other night we were talking about Cheltenham. She said she loved the job, but the bookies always win and some people cannot stop chasing their losses.

I’ve been to horse racing and love the experience but luckily can just appreciate that without betting. Others are not so lucky.

Middlesbrough Council grant a license for a 'slots' shop in the Parkway Centre and then wonder why crime levels have increased in Hemmo and the local CAB is overwhelmed. with people in debt...

Incredibly shortsighted IMO 👎
Following Blair's Gambling Act regulatory authorities were required to “aim to permit” gambling: instead of putting the onus on gambling firms to justify why more premises or operators were needed, it forced licensing authorities to justify why they weren’t, and made it very difficult to do so.

Crazy.
You're dead right.
If one revenue stream dries up, there's another takes its place....

Yeah, but we are talking about the UK here, wannabe banana republic.

Ban gambling and watch as BAE Systems or Raytheon Systems step into the void.......🙄

As a recovering gambling addict,
Cheltenham week used to be one of my favourite weeks of the year, now it is one of the hardest.

As sports fans, gambling is thrown in our face every time we go on social media or browse the Web. The algorithms used for targeted advertising ensure this.

Online gambling must be one of the most damaging inventions to the human race.

On a positive note, I'm approaching 2 years since my last bet and my mental health is probably the best it's been for years.

Just playing devil's advocate, though......... there must be hundreds of everyday things that are addictive. Do we ban advertising on them all?
Even as a person who has put my family in financial difficulty many times due to gambling, as someone who has almost lost my family numerous times, someone who is still paying debts off and will be for years due to gambling, as someone who has considered suicide many times due to gambling, I still don't think there should be a blanket ban on online gambling.

I do think advertising gambling should be banned including TV, radio, in stadiums and on shirts.

I do think gambling should be banned anywhere children are present. So if a pub allows children, there should be no fruit machines etc. If a sports stadium allows children in, then there shouldn't be bookies in the concourse. As someone who attends groups with other like minded people, gambling habits are often formed during childhood.

Online slots, casinos etc should be banned along with the machines in bookies.

But how many can be done 24/7 in your own pocket directly linked to your bank account.

Gambling is so dangerous as you do it with no interaction with others unlike drinking where you physically have to obtain it.
