Future of the Transporter

I'm no architect or engineer, but is it possible to incorporate some of the structure into the second Tees crossing, which has been on and off the agenda for decades?
I'm not suggesting it holds a road where the cradle now goes, but using the supports either side and incorporating the steel over the top of a new bridge?
That would mean having both side sections providing the bridge, with new foundations, supports, and reinforcements?
It would have to be moved and used where the new crossing of the Tees was decided.
Just a thought.

The Newport Transporter is a bridge to nowhere. The works closed and a new bridge was built close by. Infact it is closed 6 months a year and operates the summer months as a museum. They recently built a big new visitor centre. Their ambitions are to make it into the biggest tourism attraction in Wales.
Their visitor centre is still being built, I drove past it this week, it's not as bonny as ours but has probably more going for it in terms of finance etc. Ours is never going to be a viable crossing option really, take the gondola off , make it safe and its a nice looking statue. Close the airport, and use the money we spunk on that annually to pay for it.

One of the structures was/is recognised as an engineering marvel. The other would have meant knocking down half of Middlesbrough. The artist impression is totally false. Remember that after the Transporter was opened a ship lost the top of its mast after striking the top of the bridge. Think of how long the A19 viaduct is to attain that height. Imagine how long or how steep a roadway would have needed to be to reach the height of the Transporter. The whole point was to ferry workers, largely on foot, across the river. Your bridge would have started at one end near Saltholme and the other near the Cleveland Centre. In 1912 it would not have worked. In the 21st century with cars and lorries yes but then again it would probably have been built far too narrow for modern traffic.
‘Your bridge’ hahah.. I like that!

We’ve been through this before on here. You are defo in the majority of pro transporter bridge.. it’s Teesside heresy to diss the bridge! Judas Judas! I hear them shout

To make matters worse I don’t think Parmos are particularly original or unique to Teesside.
Cheese Schnitzel innit.

YOUR bridge would never fit on the new badge FFS ;)

Is there any stats on the actual time saved using the bridge as opposed to continuing on the a66 and going over Newport bridge and into Haverton hill down to the other side?

Would depend on the time of day and traffic on the road. My partner lives in Walker i begrudge giving TT2 £2.40 but its either a 15 minute journey to TESTOS roundabout or upto nearly an hour over the Tyne Bridge at peak times

I'll stick my neck out and say under no circumstances will the bridge be knocked down. The political will on all sides is that the bridge must be saved, either as a fixed structure (which is more likely) or a working bridge. I can see the whole area invested in, a huge tourist attraction with even river sailings, water sports, maybe the Capt Cook museum moved, expanded visitors centre, park cafe's and other attractions, maybe even the dinosaurs moved to both sides of the river. What ever happens, it'll have to big so it can attract enough people to make it a success.

Jet skis in the Tees perhaps?

I dont even think it has to be made to be working again, just preserved, surely thats the cheaper option. Landmark and a tourist spot when advertised properly. Was great when you could go to the top of it, especially when the lift was put in place.

Transporter bridge will be found structurally unsound.. beyond repair.. it’ll get de listed and demolition scrap metal money.. never to be seen. The £1m tunnel feasibility study will show that the bridge needed to be demolished in order to create thousands of permanent jobs. What’s the betting?

Yes, it is quicker than going around. I think it is under 4 minutes from load on to disembark.

It might prove far more costly to keep it just as a structure than a working bridge. If substantial work structural work was needed to make it safe and secure would this be a one off charge or would this be on going?
The working bridge does earn revenues from tourism charges and traffic tolls.
