Free Transfers Summer 2021

some players on that list that I would consider:
- Bright Osayi-Samuel - young, tricky, and should be hungry as he has come from lower leagues to a middling champo club. Will want to take that next step
- Daniel Johnson - experienced at this level, a good all round CM. He'll get 7 goals and 5 assists a season at this level
- Mowatt - good squad player, good character, always like signing captains from other clubs
- Nick Powell a proper number 10

Did somebody say Darnell Fisher? £300k from Preston - GREAT SIGNING
Made an appearance Newyddion's Excel Moneyball Spreadsheet appearances, massively underrated.

Gayle / Benteke /Gray.... Pipe dreams and not sure why they always come up. They are on 50-100k a week.

The fact they move for free means the can command bigger wages as the signing club doesn't pay a transfer fee. So in the current climate they may take a hit. Yet still out of our league to think we are moving Britt on who's on 30-35k.

To be honest any player coming from the prem who cost his club 4-5mil+ is gonna be on over 25k a week. I read Grosicki is on 40k and he's 32.....christ🙄

I imagine we will be looking to pay 10-15k a week at best. No point moving Britt and Fletcher on just to blow the saving on Gayle etc.

That said plenty of decent champo players going for free. I'm imagine we still pay better than half of the champo (although apparently blown out of the water wage wise for Moore and Williams).

The wages these prem players are on are frankly obscene. The majority are squad players at best.

I love the kid, his enthusiasm, his player swap lists and especially his famed spreadsheets.

But, for the sake of balance. If you post 500 players a season you think we might sign, the odd one is bound t come off!
I'm over the moon with Darnell Fisher like! Don't think there's been THAT many right backs.. he's been like the Nathan Ake of the past 2 or 3 seasons.

Ok lets take Gayle, 50k a week and has made 6 appearances for newcastle this season, all as a sub, scoring once

If he is out of contract at the end of the season where is he going to go? He cant get a game for the Toon, who are struggling so who else is going to take him? The idea he is going to be earning 50k a week on his next contract is pie in the sky! He will go to the highest bidder sure, but that might not be for very much money. He's hardly got a stellar record in the PL - 11 goals in 5 seasons for Poocastle and 26 goals in 125 appearances in the PL - so his chances of another club there are limited, even for whoever gets promoted.

At champo level he looks good but who can afford to pay him more than 10-15k a week? probably nobody. ultimately his wages are only going to be what somebody is prepared to pay, and for Gayle, thats unlikley to be out of reach of champo clubs

I think regardless of our targets, our scouting strategy seems to have moved on from Woodgate who was looking for bargains in the lower leagues to make the step up (which to be fair, Dijksteel and Bola have done).

Judging from acquisitions this season it seems that Warnock favours Championship experience, loans from PL (an underused market by Boro imo) and casting the net into Europe again (although would expect that to tail off going forward given issues with work permits).

He also seems to favour players he trusts and has worked with before, although given his managerial experience that includes most players in the football league. :D

To be fair 60%-70% of them are probably retired!

One positive of Covid is that it just might bring a bit of sensibility to the transfer/wages market. Stranger things have happened :)
Be interesting to see what happens to some of these big earning out-of-contract players in the summer.
I can imagine Gibson must be sick of shelling out big sums for little reward.
None of us will know the full story or numbers paid out but you can see how Gibson wants to 'reset' the situation.
I think the 'Derby situation' - especially when they outbid us for Waghorn was the final straw for him.
In some ways Gibson's ambition has been his undoing - for years we enjoyed transfer windows as we outbid the competition.
Derby started outbidding us and look where they are now!
But a succession of big money failures has handicapped the club for the last 4 years (bye bey Britt (y)).
Brentford's 'moneyball' approach with careful strategic decisions made on research/intelligence is surely the best model in the current climate.
Failing that, picking up 'solid pro's' at the end of their contracts such as Darnell Fisher looks a solid way forward to me.

Out of interest , how old are you Newy ? Caesium called you a kid , I haven't a scooby ! Enthusiasm of a kid , knowledge of a seasoned veteran !

Somewhere on another board but from the same planet as Newyddion, a poster will be broaching the same subject with......

Britt Assombalonga
Ashley Fletcher
Marvin Johnson
