Cleveland Fire Brigade is appealing to the public for support after repeated violent attacks on firefighters in the Northern Road, Whinney Banks area of Middlesbrough.
In the last fortnight fire crews have been called out to fire incidents in the area 13 times. Groups of children and youths are deliberately setting fires and attacking vehicles and firefighters, the latest attack was Wednesday (17 March).

Carl Boasman, Assistant Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection said: “It is completely unacceptable for our staff to be subject to violence and acts of vandalism whilst protecting the public.

“Our job is being made more difficult by the thoughtless actions of a minority who in this instance deliberately set fires and attempt to injure staff and cause damage to fire engines, potentially making that vehicle unavailable to respond to emergency incidents and diverting resources away from attending other incidents.
“Such violence puts firefighters at risk of injury or even worse
and Cleveland Fire Brigade will not tolerate such attacks. Our vehicles are fitted with CCTV cameras and staff are equipped with body cams and we will use any evidence we have to support the police to secure a prosecution of anyone who has been violent towards our staff.”
Sergeant John Sproson, from Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Team, said: “It is unacceptable that we have people in the local area purposely going out and setting fires and abusing our emergency services. This will not be tolerated in our area and we are doing everything we can in order to identify those responsible for these incidents and hold them accountable for their actions.

“People need to be aware of where their children are, what they’re doing and who they’re with. We are in the midst of a global pandemic and people also risk fines should they be caught persistently breaking the regulations.”
Middlesbrough Council’s Neighbourhood Safety team has identified two young people from the CCTV footage building fires in Northern Road. One young person has been issued with a final warning, and an application will be made for a civil injunction if they are involved in further nuisance.
The second young person has is in breach of an Acceptable Behaviour Contract and will be visited this week by the council and Cleveland Police. Two other names have been provided and they will be visited this week also.
Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: “This abhorrent behaviour is beneath contempt, and has no place in civilised society.
“Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to keep the rest of us safe, so for anyone to attack them is just unthinkable. Those responsible for these cowardly attacks will be caught and punished, and I call on all parents to teach their children that this will not be tolerated.”
The public can report issues confidentially to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111 or https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/forms/pre-form

After it had happened the second time they should have been covertly followed by police for the 3rd, 4th and 5th, enough ot figure out who it was and where they lived etc.

If it's gotten to 13 times then obviously "warnings" and "visits" arent working.

Too soft on the little $hits, and their parents.

I did some training with some fire fighters from Greater Manchester many years ago and was astounded when they told me these things happened to them.

I remember specifically saying that I could never see that happening in Middlesbrough. That even the bad people respected fire fighters and the role they do.

That was 20 years ago and its awful to think this is the reality.

You need to face facts people.
There is no real deterrent to such behaviour
There is nobody available to address the way these people are acting
The people responsible for these people have no interest in what they are doing.
As a society we are toothless.
‘Their’ numbers are steadily growing.
Predicted late 1970's. We went for it then, we're still going for it.

Yeah I was shocked when a mate over in Liverpool told me similar stories. Feuding family’s setting each other’s houses on fire then setting traps so firefighters can’t get to it. What shocked me any of those lads got hurt due to these booby traps they were told it was their own fault they got hurt because they should be more aware. My mate was off sick for nearly a year in hospital for a week with a head injury couldn’t claim compo or anything had to live on statuary sick pay while he was off work.
Said even when police went in first it was like a running battle with them he had been there trying to put out house fires with police fighting these people around them. Utter madness

Society in decay .. it’s not just sad, it’s sickening!

There is a very simple solution to this, make each area accountable for there estate. If the residents don’t work together as a collective then not one penny of funding goes into the area. if a problem family is causing issues and they are renting for example cancel their agreement and kick them onto the streets. People have to learn old school respect in their area. The estates that put the most into the area get more funding to make their area better still. Parents alone are to blame for this, were in a pandemic why the hell are they all out ? Curfew problem estates with persistent offenders and if your in that area and you don’t live there throw the book at the kids family financially. They will soon get the message.

I was first on a scene at a house fire in April last year. As I was running to the property I’d let the radio operators know the address of the fire so knew Fire brigade were on route.

Booted front door through, couldn’t get in coz of the fire / smoke (smoke was by far the main problem), went round the back to see if I could get in there, booted back door through, again couldn’t get in, by the time I got to the front the woman was at the bedroom windows screaming.

By this point some locals had gathered, (couple of them had made effort to go in but were prevented for same obvious reasons that I was), however some of the other locals decided I was letting the lady die, so obviously they wanted to have a go at me, I was asking them to get me a ladder, literally nearly ended up fighting a couple of them whilst they having a go at me and I was asking them to geta ladder.

About 7/8 mins later the fire brigade arrived and were able to go in and get her, they did CPR on her in the street before the paramedics took her and she was resuscitated in the ambulance. Fire officer said that by booting the door through it meant I’d prevented them having to do it and the that delay could have been the difference between her being resuscitated and not.

Obvs it was quite a crazy few minutes but the one thing that stuck in the memory was the locals (not all of them) wanting to have a go at me whilst I was literally trying to save their neighbours life.

I think a large portion of the general public aren’t aware of how ridiculous some people behave.

I remember when Andy Preston first got in, he was going to be all over these problem tenants, going to get them evicted, time to act.

We are clearly far too soft on these thugs. Controlled by 'PC' lawyers bleating 'What about their 'Yuman Rights' etc, etc. I think we should adopt a Russian approach to this kind of anti social behaviour. Short sharp shock. A few days in a cell, gulag even, cold and damp should do the trick. They would turn up in a van throw them in the back and off they go. Plenty of time to reflect on their behaviour and hopefully act as a deterrent. If not turn the hoses on them like the French would do! We simply accept this without really showing people behaviours have consequences.
