Finn Azaz

Give your head a shake newy hes been poor and more importantly cant be relied upon to turn up with his A game.

If the reported £1.5 million fee is true, we should definitely sign Greenwood.

I agree he's been off his game for the last few.... but £1.5 million - 21 years old - championship experience - probably low wages.... Low risk and the potential to improve is definitely there.

This feels like a Barlaser style signing. Top quality Championship Midfielder with great stats. Hope it doesnt take him a year to come good with us. Also hope the move isnt scuppered by another teams involvement

Ex-Ireland Under-21 midfielder Finn Azaz is on the verge of signing for Championship side Middlesbrough in a move worth around €2.9 million.

The 23-year-old is currently on loan with Plymouth Argyle from Aston Villa and has impressed for the Pilgrims as his eight goals and 10 assists last season were followed by a further seven goals and five assists this term.

Azaz is now set to be recalled by parent club Aston Villa in advance of the move to Middlesbrough, according to reports in the UK.

Boro currently sit 12th in the Championship, four points off the play-offs.

The North Yorkshire outfit are managed by former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick who took over last October and led the club to a fourth-placed finish, though they lost the play-off semi-final to Coventry City.

Azaz came through West Brom’s academy before signing for Villa in July 2021, but he failed to make a first-team appearance for the Premier League side as loans at Newport County and Plymouth followed.

His form in the south-west soon caught the eye as he helped the club to the League One summit last term and promotion to England’s second tier, where he has featured in all 26 Championship games so far as they sit in 18th.

But his time at Plymouth now appears to be over with the reported move to Carrick’s side now looming.

At international level, Azaz won his first and only U-21 cap in Ireland’s Euro 2023 play-off defeat to Israel in September 2022. The London native is also eligible for England and Israel and qualifies for Ireland through his Cork grandparents.

Azaz’s sensational strike in Plymouth's 3-3 draw against Watford last weekend also made headlines and led to him being included in this week’s EFL Team of the Week.

The midfielder could make his debut against Villa in the FA Cup third round this Saturday if the move gets over the line in time, while a two-legged League Cup semi-final against Chelsea also awaits Boro later this month.

It’s already been explained by Scott why that deal isn’t particularly straight forward, even if we did want to take up the option to buy.

I’ve shaken my head and can confirm that his 1 in 3 contributions from deep lying positions can be improved upon further up the pitch.

We were after Thomas Cannon in the summer - £7m ish.. went to Leicester made 5 appearances so far and scored 2 goals.

Then we wrote off like £100m of debt.. so I reckon we're good for about.. dink donk dink.. £107m lol

£7m would be a tasty amount to drop around January.. gots you about 3 or 4 really good players at this level
The writing off of debt doesn’t increase how much we can spend but it does make it much easier to loan money.

Bottom line is we clearly have some money to spend, we’re not brassic. We can raise capital and we have ffp room. Weve finally thrown the Garry monk splurge from our ffp window, we’ve got over the hump where rhose bad aignings were still on ffp but we weren’t receiving parachute payments

He's reportedly on £30,000 - our top earner, although we won't be paying it all.
