Films where sequels were better than the original

I did sort of forget that bit. But its not exploding arrows is it?
As a kid I loved Rambo: First Blood part 2, but as an adult I now rate First Blood higher.

Regarding the body count, part of the genius of First Blood is that this is a guy who could have killed the entire police force in that town, but he decided to spare them (he wouldn't be much of a hero if he massacred fellow Americans). In the sequel, they dropped him off in Vietnam where he was able to showcase his killing skills against nasty foreign types.

Still love the sequel and especially the scene "Murdoch, I'm coming for you!" :p

I get that, but as a spectacle, I enjoy the second more.

I think it's technically a better film due to the telling of 2 joined stories, but I still enjoy watching the original more.

Empire and 2 Towers I agree with.
I'd think the 3rd film is the weakest in all these trilogies.
Controversially I prefer the fellowship of the ring to the others. Appreciate Im in a minority but I think it's on the principle of less is more.

I think as it's a bit slower, more time for characters to develop. There's more suspense and intrigue (the nazgul hunting the hobbits is genuinely tense, and no one really knows what's happening at first).

There's more wonder to it, starting off in the shire and seeing the world expand from their limited pov.

It has the excellent Sean Bean as the conflicted Boromir.

The mines of moria are genuinely tense and claustrophobic.

The battle scenes might be much smaller scale, but I think have more of an impact for it and are more "realistic". I love the skirmish with the uruk hai at the end.

The other films are brilliant, but fellowship all day long for me.

If only Jackson had followed similar principles for the hobbit rather than getting carried away with his special effects budget.
