Favourite Clash song?!

I was there, ran straight up to Thr Rock Garden after to see Pere Ubu and just missed the fight near the Princess Alice if memory serves..
I was stuck in the town hall foyer as people who were leaving encountered a brawl outside and were trying to turn round and get back in to avoid it!!!

Wow, so much to say here.

I’d have to agree with ‘The Card Cheat’ I’d say. Not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but dark, sinister and mysterious. Musically can’t think of another Clash song like it in their catalogue.

Great to see Sandanista! getting the praise it deserves. Many Clash fans Ive spoken to haven’t even heard of it. ‘Hitsville U.K.’ would be my stand out on it although there’s just so many to choose from. I don’t think it’s their best album (probably not even second best) but it’s my favourite. I personally think the fact they tried their hand at pretty much every genre known to man, put out a triple LP for the price of a single AND took royalty cuts to do so makes it even more ‘punk’ than many of their other offerings.

Joe Solo recently did a show on Coast and Country Radio documenting his ‘ultimate 12 track Sandanista!’ LP and listeners were invited to discuss their opinions with each other online. I felt like I was apart of an exclusive gang (a bit like the Free Masons must feel) and it was one of my favourite moments during our ‘lockdown’ period. I’ve written a piece on it in #20 of my POINT BLANK TEESSIDE fanzine - you can get the PDF below (shameless plug).

Too young to have seen The Clash live but I did see The Mescaleros twice and the first time they genuinely made me cry when ‘Rock the Casbah’ was dedicated to Topper H. What a moment.

Streetcore is excellent yeah - a bit disjointed occasionally but I think it was put out after Joe Strummer’s death and it does have that slightly ‘unfinished’ feel to it. Global a Go-Go isn’t my favourite but it pretty much sums Joe Strummer up musically with all its different influences. As someone previously mentioned they were a very good band indeed.

I always remember so many of my mates hating Sandanista when it came out but I thought it was amazing. I guess it wasn't 'hard' enough for them, but for me it took them to a different level. Anyone else love or it hate it?

I’ve been a huge Clash fan since I was 16 (37 now) and for a long time I dismissed Sandanista!. I just didn’t get it. Maybe because it was a huge step away from what I thought the Clash were. But once you acquire the taste it’s hard to resist it’s charms! One of my favourite albums ever now.

In Joe Strummers book Redemption Song, it mentions how someone asked him years after Sandinista! was released how he felt about it and he replied with a cheeky smirk “it’s a bit much isn’t it”. That made me laugh because it’s a huge album and probably could have been cut down, but I love it!

The moment that The Clash opened with Safe European Home at the Town Hall is etched on my memory forever. Chairs everywhere. Great song .... seems rather pertinent at the moment. But Complete Control would probably be my number 1. Closely followed by White Man in Hammersmith Palais.
I made a music video for Bankrobber .... also a great song. But it was a (very good) cover by mancunian scamps Audioweb.

So many great tunes. I was quite late to liking The Clash but absolutely love them now.

One tune not mentioned by others I really like is Career Opportunities. Short and full of emotion and intent. Captures what many young people of that time were feeling.
