Faro

Off here tomorrow for a week.

I know the majority fly into Faro and move on elsewhere but does anyone have any experience of a holiday in the city of Faro?

I see the local team is playing Sporting on Friday and their stadium seems to be very central - I wonder how difficult it might be to get a ticket?

Spend a day in the Praia de faro, a long narrow stretch of beach to the south - few quid in an Uber/taxi, or there is a water ferry from faro old town (also worth a visit). My email tells me it was about 5 euro from the airport but it's in the other direction to faro.

It's a salt water / freshwater water nature reserve with flamingos on the land side and boat trips to see dolphins and the like if your into that sort of thing, and a beach in the far side

Lots of good bars and restaurants - it's basically a long thin strip about 1-2 streets wide, beach was quiet when we were there but it's that long you can find a totally secluded bit if you want to.

Also pack light so you've got enough luggage space for 3000 tins of sardine pate

Can't help with faro itself unfortunately!

Flew back from the Algarve last night via Faro. Didn't actually stop in the city, but I was impressed with the airport both in terms of facilities as well as speed of passage. - which I know has no relevance to your OP.

Stayed 4 nights in Faro with 12 lads , wrong choice , not much going on , quite rough when off the main drag . Wouldn’t go again . Albufeira much better .

I had a city break in Faro a few years ago. It’s not the most exciting city and you can wander round it in a day. There are a few decent restaurants, we found a good sushi place in the main square.

The best thing about Faro, as mentioned above, is that you can take boat trips to the surrounding islands, there is a nature reserve with deserted sandy beaches or take the ferry to the fishermen’s island which has lovely sandy beaches with beach bars and sun loungers etc.

I flew back from Faro yesterday after a week in Alvor. Weather is amazing at the moment and the airport is pretty efficient.

Fairly certain they are playing at the Stadio Algarve, which is about half hour drive away.
It's in the middle of nowhere really.

If you've booked your digs in Faro for the week, you'd be best hiring a car / doing some public transport research.
As others have said, it's probably enough for two or three days max.
Go to Olhao for a day if you're into sea food , Tavira for a day / evening etc. Go to Fuzeta if you like warm sea water.
Go to Vilamoura if you like being ripped off and braggy Irish bar golf w⚓rs

As above, Tavira lovely. The town itself is small, but pretty cool. We hired bikes and rode to Montegordo on the Spanish border.
Vilamoura is meh, but Quarteria is very traditional and a good place to hang out by the beach.
We always head west. Lagos, Alvor, Portimao are lovely places, but you need a car (Goldcar at the airport).
Albufeira beach is stunning, but the town is Blackpool on steroids. Get along the coast, though, to Armacao and Benagil, and you find some wonderful places. The walk from Lagos to Playa da Luz, across the cliffs, is beautiful

Arriving at Faro airport is one of the happiest places, for me, on this planet.

We often stay in Quarteria, well have done the last 15 years.
It's our little secret 😂
Those beaches never get full, there's at least 100 places to eat , and it's not up it's own ****.
And half the price of Vilamoura.
We luckily don't have to go term time.
Loule up the road is fantastic, especially if medfest on.

I was about to mention Loule as I assumed noone else on the thread would! Lovely, proper Portuguese town with few of the tourist trappings and Brits abroad type resorts you find elsewhere in the Algarve. There are some fantastic restaurants all over the region though, really inexpensive for super tapas type food

There's definitely more ( in order )
Dutch / German / Scandi
French
Spanish
American/ Canadian
Then British

in most places outside of Albufeira, Vilamoura, Vale de Lobo etc ..
