FAO Scubahood & AET

So my favourite team would probably be a toss up between the 96/97, 97/98 and the 2003/04 team for obvious reasons 😍

Favourite players:
Juninho, Traore, Pearson, Festa, Southgate, Ugo, Dean Gordon, Queudrue, Gazza, Merson, Marco Branca, Mendieta, Zenden, Gibson, Ayala, Emerson, Rav, Schwarzer, Mustoe, Boateng, Hasselbaink, Viduka, Downing (first spell), Leadbitter, Randolph...

Best give games would probably be:
Carling Cup Final
Steaua Bucharest semi final second leg
Beating Newcastle in the League Cup 96/97
Beating Man Utd 3-2 at Old Trafford (Dean Gordon's volleyed winner)
Beating Sunderland 2-1(?) away in 97/98 with another Emerson stunner 😍
That game v Sunderland was on my 47th birthday, remember watching it in the bouncing yellow rose pub

3rd February 1988 Boro 2 1st division champions Everton 2
Thus is high up there for me, a club over 18 months since the summer of liquidation, promotion & now going well on our return to the 2nd division, we had just drew 1-1 the previous Saturday in the 4th Round of the FAC
Me & my dad were sat in the yellow having a beer when someone came in & told us the queues were massive around the ground, we quickly sipped our beer then legged it to AP
And what a game we had in store, losing 1-0 & Everton in control, Peter Reid pulling the strings in midfield then all of a sudden the ball comes out of the sky, in an instant he controlled the ball then seeing the stars the ball had come out of when Dean Glover clattered him

The Boro grew in to the game but would we find a way through, a last minute corner at the holgate end & gooooooooaaaaaaaaaalllllllll, extra time came, we scored, the holgate were in top form, we should have scored again but not to be, with the ref playing till the champions equalised & AP bouncing the unforgettable happened & Everton equalised
On our equaliser, there coach Terry Daracot, sp, said regarding the goal, I knew they would score, their kop suckled the ball in the net

Too many to choose from, I was only a nipper in the Hendrie days!

Was watching highlights of Viduka days when he was here. How I'd love to see that quality in our team again one day. His goal vs Birmingham is one of the best I've ever seen ... he would certainly come in my top few. The fact we had him, Hasslebaink and Yak, etc ... it's sad we didn't go on doing better in the league than we did, surreal how the UEFA cup heroics happened in such a tough league season (was it the same one that guy ran and thew his ST at McClaren?? ha ha ha). What a mad season that was though .. two of the best nights of my life though, being there for Steaua and Basle. I even enjoyed the FA cup nights, I remember Charlton at home, a great night.

I remember being sat right next to Boro bench when Maccarone scored that goal after the keeper parried Rockemback's stinger .. from where I was watching I thought it had hit the net round the back and he'd missed ... before I knew it the whole block went nuts, I ended up over the front hoardings .. thought I was gonna have a heart attack haha

I'd do owt to see nights like that at the Riverside again. Shame football is a billionaires' world now and we aren't likely to ever challenge in them competitions again to that extent ..

Though if Warnock stays, gets us up next season, I think it may just be on par with what we saw those nights. The fans were just superb, I get welled up sometimes watching reviews of that season, some of the best nights of my life.

The nights out afterward were always something else too .. ha ha ha .. who knows what the future holds. For now, I'm just excited to see how far we get with Neil. I'm convinced he can get us up if he stays on. It could even happen this year if we sneak into the top six and have a play off miracle .. who knows??? UTFB X

Favourite moments, not in order:
When Baird rifled home his second to beat Newcastle, keep us up and keep them down, I thought I might explode.
Stuani scoring at home to Brighton to likely send us up at a fever pitch Riverside meant my 80 year old Dad would get another season in the Premier league.
Maccarone nights, especially Steaua of course.
The feeling in Cardiff when the ref blew for the penalty.
Schwarzer's save at Man City from the Fowler penalty after THAT strike from JFH.
Bernie scoring the equaliser at Old Trafford in the League Cup semi final made a noise I've never heard before or since from a Boro away crowd - and is noteworthy in Man U fans minds to this day.

I could do another 6, then another 6, then another, then another.
Coming right up to date...and going back just as easily.
That's why I can never stay down (we all go there).
The thought of never seeing my next great match, sampling the next home carnival, the next away army, watching my next Boro hero, the next Boro great triumph is why I can never stay down; because I know they will definitely come.

Favourite players:
Juninho, Souness, Viduka, Hodgson, Craig Johnston, Bamford, Slaven, Southgate, Schwarzer, Downing, Armstrong, Maddren, Craggs, Emerson... and Clough (never saw him play, but feel I have through my Dad)

Favourite team:
1974-75 and best
1980-81 why I still hate Wolves and Charlie Amer.
2004-05 we were very good and full of class, with a repeat of the 74-75 finish and a European adventure.
1996-97 an absolute roller coaster
2014-15 Play off defeat, but better than the promotion team imho.

I'm lucky I am comfortable, I have family and friends and I don't take it for granted as I know how fragile life can be. But we all have Boro and that is not to be under-estimated.
Best to you all

I'll highlight one match as my main memory as it was the 1st time I got taken to see the Boro when I was a nipper - The Bill Gates testimonial v Leeds in May 1974. 2 legendary lineups on display one of them being my all time favourite Boro team.

Funnily enough I found the program for this match in the loft when I was getting the Christmas decorations out.

Was that not 4-4?
I was there too.

Started out my musical taste as a big Sweet/Slade fan, which probably is the reason I've been a pop music fan ever since

Players I've loved watching over the years & still love reading about, not so much the better players that have played for us, though Mr Middlesbrough John Hickton is by far my favourite Boro player, legend the lot, he scored his 1st goal, a penalty on his Boro debut, his 22nd birthday, 22nd September 1966 & a goalscoring penalty king was born

Willie Maddren, another legend, I remember asking for his autograph in 72 & asking him if he's going, Ipswich were rumoured to be tabling a £200k offer for him, he replied no son I'm staying here, looking back maybe he knew his injury was going to scupper any transfer
Stuey Boam once said at an ex players reunion that he could play in any position on the field, including in goal & do an exceptional job too

More to follow, I love other posts on this thread, some cracking replies too

(y) I'd forgotten I had it, did my usual trick of ending up in the freezing loft for ages rifling through old stuff and reminiscing.
I'm like that a lot of the time, I go up with intentions to tidy the loft then end up reading some of my programmes, cutting others up & sticking stuff in one of my scrapbooks

Music wise. We had a thread the other day about our 1st albums so I'll go with my first ever gig. Iron Maiden at Middlesbrough Town Hall in 1980 with Praying Mantis as support. We were too overawed to get down the front for this one and I can't remember much of the music, just been blown away by the whole experience, also going to school the next day with continuous ringing in my ears 😮

£2.80 to get in, bargain :)

And ticket too, excellent 👍

Scubs & AET, when did you start going to Boro games?
I started going to the odd game when I was about 13/14, went to the games in the League Cup in 96/97 when we beat Newcastle (who were actually good at the time) and Liverpool, both were amazing atmospheres, absolutely loved it. First got a season ticket in the season we got hammered by Arsenal 6-1, can't remember what year that was?

Probably around the time I stopped buying season tickets, with full houses I didn't think I was letting the club down & they won't miss my money as someone else will buy the seat I had since the opening of the stadium
