FAO of any Normanby Residents

I have just been told that the Normanby Hotel is seeking to change it use into nine small premises that will sell take away food and drink.

At present the area surrounding Normanby Hotel has five take away premises and a cafe to serve a small population. The last thing this area needs is more take-away shops. It will end up looking like Eston Square (no offence meant). Normanby has lost some of its appeal to outsiders due to the unsightly take away signs and I personally feel this will impact further.

I would be grateful if you could email Mrs Helen Conti at Redcar & Cleveland Planning Department to try and put a stop to this.

Thanks for any support.

Most of the time it was a solid place and everyone seemed to know each other - there was a similar crowd in the bar - some fantastic days and nights, especially around Christmas when it really came to life.

But it was at the far end of what was known as the 'mad mile' between Eston and Normanby - and became a proper madhouse when it kicked off in there, it grew to be a bit like the wild west at weekends.

Real shame it has come to this as with many pubs of my youth now gone, torn down or standing derelict.
Bit of nostalgia creeping in here, even more so with the lack of drinking holes at present!

*Edit* Good luck with the attempt to stop the take-away overkill.

What a weird notion?

In my head I am imagining a wonderful food court experience like the Time Out Chicago one (pictured below) but sadly I think you're right and it'll be like Eston Square all over again (Munchies 3 and Munchies 4 maybe?) 😕20200219_190508_compress54.jpg

As the Royal (pre-makeover & extension) it had a better jukebox, but it could be a tad rough at times!

Oscars was amazing at that very juncture - some brilliant nights in there - in fact that was the very establishment in which met the first girl I was engaged to - and then the second who I married.

I have so many stories and memories of that place.

The guy, whose name will remain anonymous, who shot the Frogger arcade game machine because his frog got killed. JT standing at the bar with same pint of cider all night and every time the barmaid went to the other end, he would lean over and top it up on the free flow cider tap. The same guy pinching the rolling tobacco by stabbing it with a pin taped to the pool queue. He always had his own queue and never played pool.

I was a bit too young to have experienced The Royal sadly, it was already Oscar's when I began my underage drinking!

Incidentally, I used to work behind the bar at the pub that bears your username for a few years too!

I think you could count on one hand the number of times I have been in the Conquest. Nothing at all wrong with it, just out of the way. I live near the Poverina.

I got my username after wanting to change my old name 'Joe_Laidlaw.' I was trolling google for unusual footballers names and came across an Australian goalkeeper called Norman Conquest. I just thought it was a good fit.

''Noted goalkeeper Norman Conquest began his career as a goalkeeper with junior club Kearsley near Aberdare. He moved to Wollongong, later playing for Goodyear and Leichhardt Annandale where he made a total of 319 senior appearance. During his career Conquest became an outstanding goalkeeper, playing 15 times for NSW before winning selection in the Australian team against South Africa in the 1947 series. In 1950 Conquest was keeper in the national team that toured South Africa and Rhodesia. He was also goalkeeper in the first two matches against England in 1951. During his distinguished career Conquest played nine A class internationals.

My dad used to drink in the Pov every Friday night until we moved up to Flatts Lane and the Conquest became his drinking hole of choice (vaguely remember some sort of falling out with lots of the regulars in the Pov at some point in the early 80s and many switching to The Woodman for some reason? I'll have to ask my dad what that was all about lol)

If I am right, there was a change of landlord who upset a lot of the regulars.

I use to go in on a Thursday and have a few beers with my grandad.

I always drank in Eston from 1978 - 85 and then drank in The Cleveland, The Lampton & The Woodman and met wife in the latter. I don't tend to bother now but when I do, it is the Woody.

"but it could be a tad rough at times" Must be this weekends understatement ;)
