Its not that time again.
Its FA Cup Time...............

MBoro!.jpg

This weekend marks 13 weeks since Chris Wilder took over Coaching responsibilities at The Riverside.

Following a draw at West Brom, it was on the way to the train when someone announced "Its Wilder!" to the crowd of fans in red shirts on the station.
Immediately, the atmosphere changed - the usual mumble about missed opportunities and what might have been - the volume increased to what might be in the future.
About who knew about Wilder`s Management?
About his success at Sheffield United and how he turned average players into good players, and how he had taken players from League one to the Premiership.
Who would he get rid of?
Who would he keep?
Who would he bring in?
The train journey into New Street was too fast to answer all the questions.
Since then - we`ve lost to Preston and Blackburn.
We won games we would have previously lost.
We`ve come back from the brink like against Reading and Blackpool.
We`ve been on a much bigger train ride, where the crowds are not only holding up, but increasing.
We`ve witnessed the rebirth of players: the usual porridge of defensive games and losing our grip in the second half has disappeared.
Some have moved on and we`ve seen quality transfers and loanees - in.
It feels great to support a Manager who doesnt "not want to lose" but actually wants to go "full tilt" to win!
When last did we have a Manager who regularly puts 4 forwards on the pitch, to push the opposition all the way to the 90?

Today we are not "underdogs" or "plucky Boro". Chris is not the sort to make Wilder predictions.
One thing is for sure: he said yesterday we are not here for a "sight-seeing tour" or to stand in awe of the stadia.
It wont be because we are "grateful" to play in ther "big boy`s" garden that we dont give a 100% today.
Grass is to be played on and almost 10,000 Teessiders will be right behind the lads.
We wont worry too much about the opposition - all we are going out for is a victory - one more goal than them.

We can do it.(y)
Come On Boro!

Manchester United will be looking to secure their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup when they welcome Championship outfit Middlesbrough to Old Trafford on Friday night.

The Red Devils beat fellow Premier League side Aston Villa 1-0 to progress to this round of the competition, while Middlesbrough recorded a 3-2 victory over League Two team Mansfield Town.

Man United made it three wins in their last four matches in all competitions when they beat West Ham United 1-0 before the break, with Marcus Rashford's last-gasp winner securing a vital three points for the Red Devils, who currently occupy fourth position in the Premier League table.

Ralf Rangnick's side also overcame Brentford in the league on January 19, while they booked their spot in the fourth round of this season's FA Cup courtesy of a 1-0 success over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

Off-the-field matters involving Mason Greenwood means that the build-up to this match has been overshadowed, but the players will be raring to go following a short break, and the Red Devils are still fighting on three fronts this season, with the first leg of their last-16 Champions League contest with Atletico Madrid due to take place at Wanda Metropolitano on February 23.

Man United are the second-most successful side in the history of the FA Cup, winning the competition on 12 occasions, the last of which was in 2016, while they lost in the quarter-finals to Leicester City last season and Chelsea in the semi-finals of the 2019-20 campaign.

Friday's contest will be the first time that the 20-time English champions have faced Middlesbrough since a Premier League contest in March 2017, with the Red Devils running out 3-1 winners at the Riverside Stadium courtesy of goals from Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia.

Middlesbrough will certainly be the underdogs heading into Friday's contest, but the visitors should be full of confidence, having in excellent form since the end of November.

Indeed, Boro have won eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions, suffering just one defeat in the process, which includes a 3-2 success over Mansfield in the third round of the FA Cup on January 8.

Chris Wilder's side beat Coventry City 1-0 on January 29 to move into sixth spot in the Championship table, and they will certainly have their eye on a possible return to the Premier League for next season.

Wilder's impact at the Riverside Stadium has been huge, winning eight of his 12 games in charge, and while the league is the priority for the 54-year-old this season, the chance to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of Man United is not an opportunity that comes around too often.

Middlesbrough - back in Championship action against Queens Park Rangers on February 9 - have never won the FA Cup, but they did reach the final in 1997, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Wembley.

Man United interim head coach Rangnick has said that Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw will both be involved on Friday following spells out, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka should be available following a period on the sidelines through illness.

Jadon Sancho should also be included in the squad following personal issues, but Edinson Cavani will not feature due to his involvement for Uruguay over the international break, while Victor Lindelof (illness), Eric Bailly (ankle) and Jesse Lingard (personal) are all out.

Greenwood has been suspended by the club and will not be involved for the foreseeable future, so Rashford could feature on the right, while Nemanja Matic and Anthony Elanga should both start.

Rangnick will certainly have one eye on the Premier League clash with Burnley on February 8, but Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start for the Red Devils, while David de Gea could retain his spot between the sticks despite the presence of Dean Henderson, who has hardly been involved this term.

As for Middlesbrough, new signing Riley McGree has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Australia, so he will not be involved in this match.
Sammy Ameobi, Darnell Fisher and Marc Bola remain on the sidelines, while James Lea Siliki is still on international duty, but on-loan Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is expected to make his first start for the club.

Wilder is likely to select a strong side at Old Trafford, with Andraz Sporar potentially joining Balogun in the final third of the field, but the likes of Duncan Watmore, Lee Peltier and Martin Payero will also be hoping to be given minutes in the FA Cup contest.

Manchester United possible starting lineup:
De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, McTominay; Rashford, Fernandes, Elanga; Ronaldo

Middlesbrough possible starting lineup:
Lumley; McNair, Bamba, Fry; Jones, Howson, Crooks, Tavernier, Taylor; Sporar, Balogun

We say: Manchester United 2-1 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough will head to Old Trafford full of confidence, and the Championship side are more than capable of making this a tricky affair for Man United. The Red Devils showed plenty of positive signs against West Ham last time out, though, and we are backing them to progress to the fifth round of the competition.

Man United 1-0 Aston Villa: Scott McTominay sends below-par United side into FA Cup fourth round

1643975456312.png

Man United were below-par again but they did just enough to beat Aston Villa 1-0 and reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Scott McTominay’s header after eight minutes proved to be the only goal of the game, as Ralf Rangnick’s side set up a home tie with Middlesbrough in early February.

Villa were certainly the better time at Old Trafford, and had a Danny Ings goal harshly ruled out in the second-half, but will regret their lack of clinical edge.

Rangnick’s side came into the match after a poor performance to lose to Wolves last time out, and there was plenty to be concerned about once agin.

United made a fast start to the match though, and they got their reward in the eighth minute. They had a corner cleared out to Fred, who put a brilliant ball back into the box and McTominay rose highest in the box to head home.

But Villa responded really well to going behind. Emi Buendia dragged an effort wide of the far post, while John McGinn saw his fierce strike from 20 yards out saved by David de Gea.

Ollie Watkins came closest to getting his side back on terms, as he pounced on a terrible touch from Victor Lindelof to burst forward, chop back inside but then saw his effort cannon off the bar.

Despite their defensive frailties, United still looked a threat themselves on the attack. McTominay had a couple of shots from range, before Marcus Rashford had an effort cleared off the line by Matty Cash in the last seconds of the first-half.

The visitors thought they were level five minutes into the second-half, when Danny Ings bundled in from close range. However, after a long VAR review, it was ruled out for an earlier foul on Edinson Cavani.

PRI218007106.jpg
REUTERS
Watkins then had the ball in the end too , but the offside flag went up after Ings was beyond the last defender as he dinked it through to his strike partner.

Ezri Konsa and Cash had efforts saved, while Watkins saw a strike curl just wide of the post, as Villa completely dominated the second-half.

United managed to weather the storm though, and the visitors were unable to have the same sort of attacking threat in the final 15 minutes.

It was another below-par performance that will concern Rangnick, but he and his team this time had the comfort of reaching the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Chris Wilder plots ‘dangerous night’ for Middlesbrough’s FA Cup tie with Man Utd

The Boro boss led former club Sheffield United to victory at Old Trafford on his last visit.

2.57768290.jpg

Chris Wilder has told his players to forget about swapping shirts with Manchester United’s superstars as he plots a “dangerous night” for Middlesbrough’s FA Cup fourth-round opponents.

The Sky Bet Championship promotion-chasers head for Old Trafford on Friday evening in good form having lost only once in their last 10 games in all competitions.

Manager Wilder, who led former club Sheffield United to a shock Premier League victory on his last visit to the red half of Manchester, knows Boro will be up against it against one of English football’s aristocrats, but is demanding they run out believing they can make it to the fifth round.

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder is plotting Manchester United's FA Cup downfall

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder is plotting Manchester United’s FA Cup downfall (Richard Sellers/PA)

He said: “They’ve got some fabulous individuals and they can hurt you – but hurt three-quarters of the Premier League, if not more, and in Europe as well. They have a huge array of talent to choose from.

“But it’s not a sightseeing tour from our players, it’s not a shirt-swapping situation. I don’t want people to go into Old Trafford and enjoy the visit.

“I want the players to play well, I want us to give a good account of ourselves and make it really competitive, make it a dangerous night for Manchester United – and if we play well, I believe we can do.

“If we don’t, then it will be a comfortable night for Manchester United and nobody wants that, me included.”

“Every opportunity is an opportunity to measure and see how far we've come. This is where we want to be.”
- Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder

The Teessiders currently lie in seventh place in the Championship table – outside the play-off places only by virtue of goal difference – and promotion back to the top flight remains the overwhelming priority.

Wilder said: “It’s an opportunity to pit ourselves against world-class players and a world-class football club that’s at the top table and wants to challenge for major honours.

“Every opportunity is an opportunity to measure and see how far we’ve come. This is where we want to be.

“Of course the club has had Premier League experience and the players want to go to Old Trafford and Anfield and the Emirates and the Etihad every other week and they want to host every club in the Premier League and be part of that.

“That’s where everybody wants to be and that has got to be a target and an ambition for everybody at the football club to try to achieve.”

Wilder will head for the dugout at Old Trafford having emerged on his last visit in January last year with three points, although ultimately they were not enough to keep the Blades in the top flight and the fact that they were won in front of empty stands because of Covid-19 restrictions took much of the gloss off the achievement.

He said: “It was in front of nobody, so for me it was a hollow victory, really, in a really difficult season. It’s a different sport. It’s not even a different game, it’s a different sport.”

Manchester United vs. Middlesbrough

Aitor Karanka brings his Middlesbrough side to Old Trafford for a Capital One Cup clash without much pressure on his shoulders.

The Championship club's priorities surely lie elsewhere, with the riches of the Premier League glistening on an attainable horizon.
For Louis van Gaal, the League Cup represents possibly this season's most attainable silverware for Manchester United.

Earlier this week, in an interview for the derby-day programme, Wayne Rooney spoke of Anthony Martial and Memphis Depay's chances of emulating Cristiano Ronaldo and his remarkable achievements at United.

The Old Trafford captain said:

If they keep learning and progressing like they are, then hopefully they will do what me and Ronaldo did back then. It would be great for the team if they can do that.
The good thing is that they want to learn and that is good to see in young players. They haven’t come in and just done things the way they want to do them. They are doing things for the team and listening to what the manager is saying to them.
I am sure under this manager they will learn a lot and that will help them become top, top players in the world.

For Rooney, the League Cup was the beginning of it all—his first trophy as a United player in 2006.

Each of the subsequent three seasons saw the Red Devils lift the Premier League trophy, which had been absent from Old Trafford since 2003. Perhaps League Cup victory could be a similar catalyst for the emerging stars of Van Gaal's side?

Middlesbrough should, on paper, make for tough opponents. Karanka, though, has hinted at changes to his side, per Philip Tallentire of Middlesbrough Evening Gazette, saying "We have to be careful with the game on Wednesday because we have a lot of players with four yellow cards, a few players are injured and our squad is not big."

When Mick McCarthy brought his Ipswich Town side to Old Trafford in the third round, he made sweeping changes, making for an easier day at the office for the very strong United XI which was selected that day.

If the Teessiders make wholesale changes, it could be a similar story on Wednesday evening.

James Tuck of the official United website reported, "Antonio Valencia is a doubt after being forced off with a foot injury near the end of Sunday's derby match. The Reds are without Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair but Ashley Young and James Wilson are nearing a return."

Manchester United @ManUtd
Louis van Gaal provides the latest team news ahead of #mufc v Middlesbrough: https://t.co/tlSUIMRfFI https://t.co/Yh33dbYiae

Speaking to MUTV (h/t ManUtd.com), Van Gaal hinted at changes from recent lineups, saying:
I have a lot of players in the "red zone" because we have had a lot of matches and we have a lot of matches to play. I have to see if I can use them or not. I have to decide tomorrow [Wednesday].
We need all the days to recover at this moment, so it is difficult to say.

According to the official Middlesbrough website, the Teessiders will be without Albert Adomah, who twisted his ankle in the win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Adam Forshaw missed that game with an injury and is considered a doubt, although Stewart Downing did manage to feature as a substitute at Molineux, in spite of carrying a knock.

Cristhian Stuani is still injured, as are "long-term injury victims Alex Baptiste, Rhys Williams, and Damia Abella."

The Middlesbrough Evening Gazette lists Daniel Ayala, Adam Clayton, Grant Leadbitter and Diego Fabbrini as the players Karanka could rest, given they are "walking a disciplinary tightrope on four yellow cards."

Predicted Lineups
Manchester United - Football tactics and formations

With Van Gaal confirming to MUTV (h/t the club's website) that Wilson and Andreas Pereira are in the squad, the lineup could look something like that shown above. Of course, with the League Cup it is closer to an educated guess than a prediction.

Included above are Michael Carrick and Daley Blind, on the rationale that they need some game time. Chris Smalling is rested, given how vital he is to United's current form, and how much football he has played in recent weeks.

David De Gea will presumably play, given that Van Gaal has never once rested him. Elsewhere, youngsters Pereira, Jesse Lingard and Wilson are all included, on the basis that none of them featured for the Under-21s against Sunderland.

Memphis Depay is included, and this is a fine opportunity for him to be reintegrated into the first-team picture.

David De Gea in action in Moscow

Boro's lineup is even harder to predict, given Karanka's suggestion that he will mix things up here. Expect to see some youngsters on view as the Teessiders concentrate their efforts on a promotion push.

Players to Watch

Selecting players to watch is a challenge given the likelihood of changes. However, assuming he plays, Pereira may be one to keep an eye on. He certainly impressed against Ipswich, against whom he scored a magnificent free-kick.

Indeed, the 19-year-old gave the impression of being ready for the step up to first-team action during that game, although since then, he has only featured in a 28-minute long cameo against Wolfsburg in the Champions League.

He was unable to take his chance to impress in that game, but this may be another opportunity for the young Brazilian to shine.

Manchester United @ManUtd
Speaking to United Review, @AndrinhoPereira reveals how #mufc helped shape him as a player: https://t.co/oQFiqpty0H https://t.co/ndhG7b4z4n

For Middlesbrough, fit-again Downing will be a threat, presuming he plays. He has two goals and two assists to his name already this season and is leading Boro's average key passes per league game charts with two.

The Championship side have spread the goalscoring out among their forward players so far this season.

Diego Fabbrini is in top spot with four, but each of Stuani, David Nugent and Kike have three. United's defenders will have to be on their toes no matter who makes the starting XI for Karanka's side.

Kike needs to impress

Kike needs to impressChris Brunskill/Getty Images

Dominic Shaw of the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette suggests Stuani's injury could lead to an opportunity for Kike.
He wrote:

After starting the season impressively, Kike has struggled in recent weeks. He was totally ineffective at Reading and has started on the bench for the three games since then, getting a few minutes here and there to try and impress.
He puts a shift in, holds up the ball well, his link-up play is good—but Kike must start scoring more goals.
The next five weeks will be absolutely pivotal for Kike. He must perform when the chances come his way.
This may be the first opportunity Kike, 25, has to show how he can be an important player for Karanka's side in the months ahead.

Key Battle:
With Boro's side so uncertain, the specifics of the key battle are hard to nail down. However, if the pattern of play is typical for sides visiting Old Trafford, it will be down to United's strike force to do a better job than they managed against Manchester City.

The quality of opposition will presumably be less taxing, but an impressive attacking performance—especially if Van Gaal picks some youngsters—could give the manager some intriguing selection headaches given the recent under-performance of Rooney.

"Theater of Dreams"?
You Bet! (y)

We know what happened: 10,000 Teessiders, doing well in the Championship, descended on Old Trafford and took up the whole of one end behind the goal. [That sounds familiar?]

Boro had one or two decent players "lyke" and we made the home "fans" sound like door-mice. We fought like trojans - and against predictable predicitons of imminent defeat - we took them to Penalties in their own back-yard and made them look like a bottom half Championship side. We had the winning mentality - the Teesside Spirit of Never-Say-Die!

Wayne Rooney was confident they were going to overcome this annoying noisy team from the North East. The London - based media had written their match reports before the pre-match prawn sandwiches. But we stuck to the game plan - and even waved our iphones in support of Teesside Steelworkers.

I couldnt resist revisiting that night:

How Greening Was My Boro?

Published 2020: https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/j...-manchester-united-to-middlesbrough-transfer/

Jonathan Greening opens up on Manchester United to Middlesbrough transfer

1643979744549.png
Former Boro man Jonathan Greening has revealed that his decision to join Middlesbrough from Manchester United was the best decision he made during his football career.

Greening ended his three year stay at Old Trafford when he joined up with Steve McClaren’s Middlesbrough in the summer of 2001. He represented Middlesbrough on 104 occasions during his three year stint at the Riverside Stadium, eventually departing for West Bromwich Albion in 2004.

Greening played for United during a period when they had just signed the likes of Juan Sebastian Veron and Ruud Van Nistelrooy with the former Boro man believing that he wouldn’t get the game time that he required to develop as a player. Speaking exclusively to 888sport, he opened up on his departure from the Red Devils: “Having Steve McClaren there when I went to Middlesbrough made it miles easier for me.

“At the time I’d been at Manchester United for three years and played 34 times in all competitions. They had just signed Sebastian Veron for thirty-odd million and Van Nistelrooy for a big fee. I said to Alex Ferguson that I needed to go out and play regularly.

“Obviously when McLaren went to Middlesbrough he wanted to take myself and Mark Wilson with him and so I knocked on Alex Ferguson’s door and said that this was a huge opportunity for me and that I didn’t think I’d play week in, week out because he’d just signed all these world class stars.

“He actually offered me a contract to stay but I told him it wasn’t about that. I was 22 years old and needed to play. We had two or three meetings over the next couple of weeks and he decided to let me and Mark go.”

1643979957672.png
Greening played a big role in Boro staying in the division for three consecutive seasons as they finished 12th and 11th twice during his stay at the Riverside Stadium.

Greening went on to praise McClaren in his role which allowed him to kick-start his career in the Premier League, describing his move to the North East as the best thing he ever did, he continued:

“Steve knew all about me from our time at United and he wanted to give me first team opportunities and going there that summer was the best thing I did because it kick-started my career. I made over a hundred appearances in three years and that’s what you need as a young player: to play these matches and learn the job.”

Greening went on to play for the likes of Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Barnsley before hanging up his boots officially in 2017 following a spell with Northern Premier League Division One North West side Tadcaster Albion AFC.

The Verdict

Greening showed a lot of guts to leave Manchester United in search for first team opportunities as many young players today would be happy to remain at a big club just to have a reputation. It can be really difficult for a young player to acclimatise to a new environment, one that is not as good as the one he is used to but having Steve McClaren there appeared to help Greening settle in at Middlesbrough.

Remember Middlesbrough's 2002 cup victory against Manchester United? The match-winner certainly does...

Andy Campbell turns back the clock and reflects on Boro's victory and his goal against Manchester United 15 years ago which came just days before he left the club
1643980687120.png
"Looking back, it was a great way to sign off in front of the home fans and in front of my family and friends and everyone who had watched me grow as a young player.

"But it was a bit strange as well. I knew my days were numbered. The gaffer had plans to bring in his own players, which is football, that's fine. It was just a case of when.

"It maybe made the manager look a bit daft, scoring and then letting me go that week but worked out fine for him, he went on to bring in some world class strikers."

Talking of world class strikers, Sir Alex Ferguson introduced Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dwight Yorke from the bench when the game was goalless at the Riverside, hoping the duo would spark the visitors into life. On went Ryan Giggs too.

For Boro? Mark Wilson and Jason Gavin joined Campbell as the substitutes used on the day.

"Warming up with the likes of van Nistelrooy and Giggs was surreal," he recalls.

"It was great and it shows the strength in depth that they had. I remember Ronnie Wallwork played that day, and Luke Chadwick and a couple of other youngsters, but their squad was still immense. Their bench was full of world class stars but on that occasion we ground them down and got the result we needed.

"I remember there wasn't much happening in the game and it looked destined for a replay when the gaffer gave me the nod. I think it was just for fresh legs really, to try to cause problems for their defence. Especially Blanc. And we just ran them ragged, worked hard, created a couple of decent chances and thankfully me and Noel grabbed a couple of goals."

1643980751675.png
The game, televised and played out in front of a sparse crowd of just 17,624, was 15 years ago but Campbell talks through his goal as though it was yesterday.

"I remember closing down and the goalkeeper (Barthez) made a rushed clearance. The ball got kicked into midfield and we broke away, three vs two. The ball got played to Noel Whelan and then on to Dean Windass, I think it was, who crossed in for me to score the header.

"For me to score a header is extremely rare," he laughs.

"I remember I was stretching for it and if somebody had watched me behind the goal my eyes will definitely have been closed. I won't have had my eyes open because I didn't like heading the ball at the best of times! The ball was a little bit in front of me and I headed it down, my technique was probably correct for the first time in my career!

"It was a great ball though and I knew I just had to get some connection on it. It was nice to finish it off, to put the game to bed."

The sides have gone head to head 21 times since that cup tie. Boro have come out on top on five occasions, including the penalty shoot-out victory in the League Cup last season.

Paddy McNair explains why he left Manchester United

[Published October 2016]

Paddy McNair has admitted Jose Mourinho did not want him to leave Manchester United on a permanent transfer and only wanted him to go on loan.

The 21-year-old academy graduate joined Sunderland this summer after making 27 first-team appearances for United under Louis van Gaal. He went on the club's pre-season tour of China in July but the Portuguese manager told him on his return that he was keen for him to go on loan.

McNair has now explained how he persuaded Mourinho to allow him to move to the north east on a permanent transfer.

He said: "I went on the pre-season tour and after I spoke to Mourinho he said to me he would like me to go out on loan.

"I had a think about it when I was out on the pre-season tour and even a little bit when I was at the Euros, I never wanted to go on loan. I was adamant I wanted to go on a permanent move. I spoke to Mourinho for a couple of weeks and basically persuaded him to let me go on a permanent deal.

"I see too many players go out on loan that don't play. You're never their player; it's a loan. I just wanted to go to Sunderland and play in the Premier League every week and that was my thinking behind it. I've no regrets."

McNair reiterated that Van Gaal played him in the wrong position, having been deployed mainly as a central defender at Old Trafford, whereas now he is excelling in midfield for the Black Cats.

He added: "I'm not a defender; I've never been a defender. I filled in there a few times. Van Gaal played me there and I was happy to play there for him (but) in the back of my mind I always thought, 'No, this isn't my position, I know I'm a midfielder'.

"I don't play in defence any more, I've not played in defence in ages. I read people still calling me a defender; but I play in midfield for club and country."

Tomas Mejias sends message to Middlesbrough ahead of FA Cup clash with Manchester United

1643981940555.png
Middlesbrough will once again travel to familiar ground in the FA Cup on Friday night as they face English giants Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Boro have faced the Red Devils many times in the Premier League down the years but they’ve also not been averse to squaring off in England’s oldest cup competition.

Since 1999, the two sides have played each other five times in the FA Cup and over 9,000 Middlesbrough fans will descend on Manchester for what could be a very interesting tie.
The last time the two sides met in a cup clash though was in the EFL Cup in 2015 and it was where one player ended up becoming a cult hero amongst Teessiders.

Having played out a goalless draw after normal time, Boro were successful in the resulting penalty shootout with goalkeeper Tomas Mejias saving spot-kicks from Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young.

The Spaniard was sparingly used at the Riverside following his arrival in 2014, featuring just 17 times in a four-year period before departing in 2018 and he now keeps goal for Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers.

But the night at Old Trafford over six years ago put him in the Boro history books and he’s sent a message to the club ahead of their upcoming encounter with Ralf Rangnick’s side

There`s that tackle from James Morrison which sent Ronaldo flying - in his first spell at Old Trafford:

Boro fans remember it well.
Ronaldo was attempting to show his delicate skills to the adoring United fans.
But Morrison showed a bit of Teesside Steel and sent him crashing to the pitch!

The 37 year old Ronaldo is not happy with their latest Manager.
Having been subbed and dropped recently he has had a "face on".
If he plays tonight - lets hope Dael can add to his woes(y)

7 Clubs With the Most Premier League Wins Against Man Utd at Old Trafford

Manchester City became the most successful visiting team at Old Trafford in Premier League history this week when they won for the seventh time against Manchester United at M16. Old Trafford has traditionally been a fortress for United, but some clubs, including some that may surprise you, have enjoyed success at the Theatre of Dreams over the years.

West Brom became something of a bogey side for United after winning three of the last five times they played at Old Trafford prior to relegation from the Premier League last season. Their last victory was actually the game that handed Manchester City the title.

For decades, the Baggies couldn't win at Old Trafford and their 2-1 win against David Moyes' United in September 2013, secured by a goal from Saido Berahino, was a first in 35 years. It was downhill after that and United have only beaten them at home once since.

Middlesbrough - 3

Somewhat bizarrely, United have won a lesser proportion of their Old Trafford Premier League fixtures against Middlesbrough over the years than they have against Liverpool or Arsenal, beating the Teessiders only eight times in 15 meetings.

Boro have also won three times at Old Trafford in the Premier League. The first of those was a famous 3-2 win during the 1998/99 treble season, while 5'6'' Juninho scored a headed brace in another 3-2 Middlesbrough victory in the 2003/04 campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur - 3

United have traditionally a very strong home record against Tottenham in the Premier League era, winning 21 of 27 fixtures played at Old Trafford. But with Spurs one of the last remaining ever-presents, sheer repetition has given them three wins.

The reality is that two of those victories have come just since Sir Alex Ferguson, who once gave a pre-match team talk consisting of the line, 'Lads, it's Tottenham', retired in 2013, while the other came during the legendary Scot's final season.

Arsenal - 3

Given the intense rivalry between the two clubs for the best part of a decade, fans might be surprised to learn that Arsenal haven't won more often at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, especially seeing as the Gunners enjoyed a particularly famous victories in 1998 and 2002.

Cristiano Ronaldo was still playing for United the last time that Arsenal won a Premier League fixture at Old Trafford way back in 2006. It was actually his mistake in possession that led to the winning goal from Emmanuel Adebayor.

Liverpool - 5

Liverpool went through a famous spell of good result at Old Trafford in the early 2000s, winning 1-0 against United in the Premier League in three out of four years - they lost the other 4-0. It was even the same player who scored the winner every time, Danny Murphy.

Since that last Murphy winner in 2004, Liverpool have actually only won twice at Old Trafford in the Premier League, including a shock 4-1 drubbing in 2009, but not at all since 2014. The Merseyside visitors have lost 11 of their last 15 Premier League visits.

Chelsea - 6

Chelsea actually had a very strong Premier League record at Old Trafford not before Roman Abramovich turned the club into a wealthy powerhouse and are the club that United have struggled most against over the last 27 seasons, winning only 38% of the time at home.

There has been no pattern or runs to Chelsea's Old Trafford wins, with victories typically coming once every few seasons in a fairly consistent manner. Given that 2013 was their last, it might about time that they are due another, which is bad news for United ahead of this weekend...

Manchester City - 7

Goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane this week gave Manchester City a seventh Premier League win against Manchester United at Old Trafford. It was the third successive season in which City have at the home of their great rivals and the sixth time in the last eight years.

United fans will point out that City famously went more than 10 years without a single derby win between 1989 and 2002, and that all but one of their Premier League wins at Old Trafford have come since Sheikh Mansour invested more than £1 billion into the club.
