Are peoples lives being ruined by the Tories specifically, or are there parts of the country where nothing seems significantly change for the better regardless of the incumbent government, so people lose hope and interest?
I can't speak for everyone.
For me, New Labour didn't go anywhere near far enough with their socialism. They trumpeted the third way as a means to mollify the left whilst continuing with a largely Thatcherite economic programme.
However, things like SureStart made a huge difference to people.
Funding for schools and hospitals (depsite the evils of PFI) meant structural improvements that had been neglected by the previous Tory government. With higher education as a viable aspiration access to education and healthcare became better across the board.
There were a lot of things done badly and a lot of opportunities missed, but the general trend was upward. The regions (especially locally) weren't helped as much as they could or should have been - maybe that would have come with more time..?
The Coalition followed by sole Tory rule brought us a decade of austerity that did nothing for the vast majority and left many worse off. They knew it would do nothing. Now they're on about bringing it back.
It is a Tory ideology and has a single purpose. Move cash from the state into private pockets.
Labour need to grow up and approach finance in a sensible manner. Explain how the system works. Then set a manifesto that lays out how they'll improve the lives of ordinary people.
It won't make people millionaires but it needs to offer a recognisable improvement whilst promoting realistic expectations - e.g GP waiting times aren't going to improve without increasing GP numbers. How is that done?
People lose hope and interest because people in the main don't care for day to day politics. The media drive emotions and that is something else we need, as a nation, to deal with.
