Euros 2020 (really 2021)

I've not read the book but it's clear that Blatter had a personal grudge with England. In a certain way I see FIFA's point. Only England's authority calls itself The Football Association. Why can't they have a bit of modesty and call themselves the English Football Association.

That said, it is baffling how England has only ever hosted two international football tournaments. The country is football crazy with the grounds and infrastructure to allow for a good competition.

I understand the 1996 argument, but put it into context. Club football (which is dominant in England) was only just changing. Most clubs had mainly British and Irish players. These days club football is cosmopolitan. At least in the Premier League and Championship. I think fans would go to non England games as they know most players well as many have played or play in England.
Much of it is our own doing.

World Cup-wise we withdrew our 1990 bid and again the 1998 bid as we concentrated on hosting Euro '96, which we entered into a gentleman's agreement with Germany not to offer opposition to their World Cup 2006, then reneged on that, put a bid forward, lost it, and damaged our reputation in doing so. And then we had no option but to pull out of 2022 as all the non-UEFA nations did so with the possibility of hosting 2018.

We lost out on hosting the Euros in 1980 to Italy and the issue of hooliganism seemingly damaged our Euro '88 bid.

And it's that attitude that makes them look pompous and arrogant.
only to those that don't know history. The allegations of arrogance and hatred of the FA are not due to the naming, but because of our system of 4 separate nations gives us a greater say in the laws of the game and for some time it was the FA that owned and governed those rules.

The FA existed before any other body, then The French set up an international board for running the game which became FIFA. We declined to be members for about 40 years and only entered the world cup for the first time in 1950. We agreed with FIFA that 2 home nations and 2 other nations would form the board that decided on the games rules. This later became the reason the England were hated in footballing politics as we had an unfair control of the laws of the game.

I doubt that other countries take your very English view of it. Yes organised football originated in England. That was a very log time ago and the game has moved on massively since.

I doubt that other countries are so childish as to take issue with a name that has originated through a quirk of history.

As said above, it's the 4 home nations having as much say as every other country in the world combined when it comes to the rules of the game that people take issue with.

We''re also the only nation not to put our country's name on stamps, because we invented them, I doubt that foreign postal services bear a grudge against the UK because of it.

Good post. The name reinforced all that. It's similar to a story Imran Khan tells about Umpires in cricket. When it was suggested international Umpires officiated games the English reaction was our Umpires are better than yours, so we don't need it. Khan says it is that attitude that doesn't help England.

Rumours on social media that the whole tournament is to be played in England due to the pandemic. Would absolutely love that.
Be nice if so. Just thinking about which 11 stadiums to selected to use for Euro games? 12 cities (including London Wembley is one of them) been selected for Euro so I am actually thinking this could be used for the Euro games being played at

Wembley
Spurs?
Southampton?
Leicester?
Leeds?
Man Utd?
Man City?
Aston Villa?
Liverpool?
Newcastle?
Not sure if Hampden Park will be included?
It can't be more than 2 from same city I believe? It'll be interesting to see where the games being played at. If it's just being played in England then Hampden Park won't be included.

I'll be honest, now it's actually looking like happening, I'll be a bit disappointed if this is England's only chance for a while to host a tournament.

Even with the best will in the world, and a supercharged vaccination programme, we're going to have heavily restricted crowds and probably very few away fans.

It won't be much of a spectacle, and a bit of a rush job, wherever it's hosted.

But needs must.

I don't see any reason why it can't be UK wide though.
I'd say Ireland too if they ramped up their vaccination.

Surely it would make sense to keep it based in London?
Chelsea
Arsenal
Spurs
Wembley
Crystal Palace
Fulham
Watford
Brentford
QPR

Less chance of spreading stuff around the country. Those were the worries made on here about music festivals weren't they?

If it is spread around the country I'm fully expecting some folk in Boro to be outraged that the Riverside hasn't been chosen as a host venue.

I think we're have already planned to bid for 2030 World Cup.

No it doesn't. Need to play more than 1 city in host country. Why all London clubs?

Watford are not in London and sorry but QPR and Brentford are not in the Premier League.

Strange times we currently live in.
Why does it matter that a club's stadium isn't in the premier league?
Why London? Because it has the most stadiums in a close proximity to each other.

Why do you need 12 stadiums?

But that's not currently workable for obvious reasons at the moment hence the rumors that the tournament will just be hosted here outright.

As much as I'd love to see 80,000 people at Wembley watching international football the government, on the advice of SAGE will simply not allow it, so why would they also allow spreading the tournament around the full country?

Why does it matter? There won't be many fans allowed in anyways so the majority of fans watching will be watching on TV.
It's an absolute dive! For both fans and for players. No chance the bigwigs at UEFA would fancy going there!

I do wonder about how football crazy we are.

We love our teams certainly.

Even if they're not playing, we love a rip-roaring thriller, but those are few and far between most of the time. We tell each other that football is about entertainment, but if it's entertainment you're looking for, its a poor choice. I'd guess most people will turn off the TV if a match between neutrals if it isn't a thriller.

I don't think too many people are that crazy about the slog and grind of the contest that football usually is, if it's not between teams they care about. I think the market for tickets between neutral teams is smaller that you'd guess.
