European Super League - New Lifeline

UEFA not compliant with EU law by blocking European Super League apparently.

I'd be quite happy for Europe's elite clubs all to break away and have their Super League to be honest. Reset the domestic competition and narrow the gap between the Championship and the Premier League.

One of the big issues would be that these clubs would want to keep a team in their respective domestic leagues and cup competitions. If they’re determined to go then I would let them but make them withdraw their memberships and/or revoke their licences, so when this Super League eventually blows up and turns to sh*t - which it will, because who wants to watch Liverpool play Atletico Madrid in Doha for the right to finish 9th in the league table? - and they want to come back to their own leagues, they are allowed back but must start off at the bottom of the ladder and work their way back. Like everyone else. If you’re going, then go. You’re not having both.

Not what they want though. They want to have their cake and not only eat it, but have another cake too.

Of course that's a lot of football but they'll have the money for 2x elite squads of players so not a massive issue. Just means they'll monopolise all the top players even more than they already.

Gap will just get wider.

Good. If they want to F off to their closed shop circus then it’s up to them. In return they don’t play domestic league, domestic cups, European competitions, they play in their own little league for eternity. They are no longer affiliated to FIFA or UEFA. Their players cannot play for their countries in any competition but can get as rich and fat as they like. Their kick offs can be at times to suit TV markets and their fans can be at home in Malaysia watching on tv while the locals are at home in bed asleep or at work. Super attractive! Novelty will wear off quickly. Their greed will lead to franchising and hopefully real footy fans will see through and set up Phoenix clubs in the various cities and rise again with support of the appropriate FAs.

FIFA / UEFA and the other associations plus the domestic FAs etc need to actually work together to ensure they protect the integrity of the world game and stay strong on the above. Might devalue slightly the comps initially in the eyes of some but ultimately super league will eat itself.

I’ll not be watching / paying subscription and I dare say the majority won’t.

Meanwhile, everyone else carries on as is with leagues and competitions as they currently stand.

Also, has anybody asked the players, coaches etc if they want this? These games are inevitably going to be played everywhere from Bangkok to Dubai to Riyadh, Los Angeles and Montreal. The constant travelling, the carbon footprint, it’s absolutely insane.

Can you really see that happening though? Absolutely no chance, they don't have the balls and in any case they're as driven by greed as any of the clubs involved. No chance they'll ban their top (most marketable) clubs.

As if FIFA/UEFA etc have ever had sporting integrity at the top of their agenda.

I do agree that's how it should be handled (and I do think the clubs would blink first). I'm pretty sure it won't be handled like that though sadly.

All about the £££££

I suspect they are not interested in anything except the revenue from the rest of the world. LIV golf is paving the way - throw enough money and drift begins. The governing bodies haven't covered themselves in glory mind. The way the Premier League is run has produced a nice cartel for the hoovering up of the cash - the group may wax and wane in size but it is the usual suspects clustered at the top every year. The gap between the haves and have-nots is growing wider all the time - mirroring society in many respects.

The ruling has literally said that UEFA and FIFA cannot punish clubs for joining other competitions.

So those threats won't work.

A possible benefit of Brexit is that the ruling doesn't apply to the UK and our domestic leagues. In theory, we would still be able to refuse admission to our competitions, refuse work permits etc.

The sooner they go the better. It’s a one way ticket with no return though 👋🏻 👋🏻

Will give us a much more competitive league and produce more home grown players.

Ban the players from playing for the international team also

As above, this proposal is very much designed to protect the entrants positions in domestic leagues (in effect, it replaces the UEFA competitions).

I'm not convinced any of the relevant domestic bodies would really expel the top sides from their respective leagues when they can, in theory, compete in both.

It's a simple power play between the big clubs and UEFA, with them wanting complete control over how competitions are run, and more importantly, funded.
