English folk...

Thankfully there seems to be a huge resurgence of English folk, especailly regional English folk, some are huge in their cities and even nationally. The likes of Liverpool's Jamie Webster and the excellent London's Louis Dunford

Now I do love Amelia Colburn- Dublin Serenade was excellent, but we don't appear to have a huge Teesside English Folk star in the making like Jamie and Louis, or am I missing out on a future Van Garbutt, that I haven't heard of or are building to to become a Teesside icon?

I find it odd, I'm pretty sure Louis Dunford wrote the Arsenal fans anthem, And Jamie Webster the Liverpool Fans anthem, yet we don't appear to have a folk anthem for Boro, Newcastle maybe do with the brilliant Sam Fender, surely we have some local folk talent somewhere?

I do like Freakons, but don't see them as huge Teesside Stars.
And I've seen Paul Smith many times; I'd struggle to put in him as a folk singer.

For me with Teesside folk, I want to hear a Teesside connection in the song, someone with a stringed instrument telling us a Teesside story. Maybe I'm too old, but in the cities there do seem to be lots of folk with connections to their way of life. Not much in Teesside sadly.

I saw Unthank Smith earlier this month, they were great. It’s so good to hear songs both old and new about our region.

The week before that was Lisa O’Neill in Sage 2. She was brilliant. I imagine that for some her voice will be an acquired taste, but if you get the chance to see her I highly recommend her. She’s a fantastic performer, tells great tales about the songs and even has a dulcimer player. You don’t get many of those to the pound.
