Teesside trio officially the best folk group in the country
Sean Cooney, David Eagle and Michael Hughes won best group at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - for the second year in a row
Side note but… God Vin Garbutt was wonderful wasn't he? I’m one of those “English people in a foreign clime” going “doo-lally” for a bit of folk, but even so I think he was objectively brilliant.or am I missing out on a future Van Garbutt
If you get the chance go and see him with an Unthank. It may change your perception. I'm hoping he records something with Pauline Murray of Penetration. He did a very engaging interview with her for the Baltic Gallery. Two excellent voices I'd imagine working well together. He was folky singer before Maximo Park he says.I do like Freakons, but don't see them as huge Teesside Stars.
And I've seen Paul Smith many times; I'd struggle to put in him as a folk singer.

The Young 'Uns, are pretty ace, while the Unthanks lasses Rachel & Becky both consider themselves at least semi-Teessiders and I'd recommend The Wilsons too - down to 4 now but still making a mighty racket. Also Ken Wilson (the brother now working solo) has a wonderful voice.
All of the above have many Teesside songs in their repertoire, and are genuinely good folk.
I'd also highly recommend going to the Chapel on the last Friday of each month - a wonderful folk club, run by someone of this parish. I took a guest down a few months ago - she's highly experienced and well traveled - and she was completely blown away.
Lastly, there'll be plenty local talent to see and hear at the end of May at the first Hutton Rudby Folk Fest, held over a long weekend.
