England v Italy match thread

Toney is the next best after Kane for me.

Then flip a coin between Wilson and Watkins. Watkins is more reliable though cos Wilson gets regular knocks.

Toney will get a move in January to Spurs or Arsenal in my opinion. Be interesting to see how he does after a few months of no football

I love how calm and comfortable the team have looked for years now - for years english teams looked like 11 players that had not practiced much together.

It's the opposite now - they all know their roles - and whether you like it or not - there is a stable style of patience and possesion with short sharp attacks when there is opportunity.
That’s Southgate’s doing - possession based football with a threat
Best manager we have had since Alf Ramsey

Can tell Phillips is very frustrated with his situation at Man City.

Surprisingly honest and saying he knows he was lucky not to be sent off tonight.

I hope he gets a move soon, or game time, he's a good player who's lacking sharpness.
Yeah I like the lad. Always gives a good interview.

The touted Newcastle move would be a very good one for him. Although he would have to fight to get in that team too. But would definetly have more chance of a regular game there

Toney to Spurs seems a very obvious move (y)

Well isn't this a thread of two halves? 🤔😆
I haven't read it but let me guess, southgate out, negative, best squad in the world and he's screwing it up, Italy are rubbish but we are rubbisher etc. etc.

Lets be honest, Southgate's tactics were excellent against a great manager, yes this Italy team doesn't have a Divine Ponytail or Totti, but it's very well organised, and packed with technically and tactically strong players, probably lacks a proper threat up front, but they don't usually get raped at the back like they were tonight. Or starved of ball up field like they were tonight. This Italy side are still a top 10 side, in fact 7 in the world according to FIFA, and they were second best.

Southgates done the double over probably the most difficult low block to play against in world football. Not bad for someone that's more bothered about taking the knee than playing attacking football and is out of his depth.

They tried to target Trippier and got some success in the first half, second half we starved them of the ball and got Rice and Rashford to double up when we didn't.

Rashford apparently shouldn't have played, but he scored a great goal and was a threat all game

Maguire is much maligned but proved again that he's a stand out defender for England

Philips, yes, played well enough but was physically a little rusty and that nearly cost us, although we were so strong second half that I wouldn't have been surprised to beat them with 10 men.

I think that if we get Philips out of City and playing, and solve the LB problem then, yes this squad, playing this way under this manager can win a trophy

It's a weird one. I'm sure he went there, thinking understudy/back up to Rodri, but there's plenty of games and I'll get my chance.

But in the last month he seems to be behind Rodri, Kovačić, Rico Lewis and even Stones at DMC.

I can only assume Pep doesn't like something in Phillip's game that he sees in training every week, he needs to leave.

I think his ability with the ball is questionable. Yes, without it, he's very good (although think he lacks some spatial awareness, preferring one-on-one battles to closing spaces) but the % possession City have, he needs to be an excellent technician with the ball too. He isn't.

Seems an odd £50 million plus investment then!

Pep did similar with Grealish, bought him and developed him. Perhaps he is still being "improved" to fit into the City team? Without being a fly on the wall it is impossible to know but if he is looking for a move in January it is likely that he is a fail rather than a project.
