England ladies were magnificent !

I really enjoyed the game, it was a great advert for the women's game as a whole.
Looking forward to the final on Sunday, Spain will be a very hard opponent, but you have to have faith in this team as they have all the hallmarks of those German mens teams that always went deep in tournaments regardless.
Will be nailed on for SPOTY if they can add the WC to their Euro crown.

I was wondering who would be the first to mention SPOTY.:)

Wonderful display from the Lionesses, and absolutely the right result.

However, this hasn't prevented some of the most bilious and bitter comments (already!!) in the Oz press. Jeez - they do seem to be really the world's worst losers as well as terrible winners - no class, and terrible attitude.

The Lionesses have been accused in the Australian Telegraph (just a few minutes ago) of 'roughing up' the Matildas, 'ludicrous' tactics' and hypocrisy (England as a whole) after calling out their cheating in the Ashes ("self-appointed moral judges of global sport') and then making a few healthy midfield tackles, or deliberate and premeditated assaults, as the Aussie morons saw them.

The same newspaper hired a helicopter to over-fly the Lionesses in training and publish/pass on formations etc, coupled with the some of the most provocative and just plain nasty predictions about England as a whole and what was going to happen to the Lionesses.

Even for a tabloid, it's about as gutter as it gets.

The booing from their crowd today was a disgrace too.

After all that, beating them is just SO satisfying!!!

Wingeing poms? Pot calling kettle black methinks!

The Lionesses winning the whole thing will be just PERFECT - I reckon Oz will just melt down. As will the whole of England, but in a much better way!!
The media here (Western Australia & nationally) were getting a bit carried away I thought, lots of bulling the Matildas up, Sam Kerr blah blah, we beat them 2-0 earlier this year, massive crowd etc. They were not really giving England any chance in my opinion.

The commentary followed the same vein, dirty England, cynical, stopping us playing. Not really sure if they were playing to their audience or they hadn't got a clue? Everyone here was a Matildas fan, my wife included. I must admit I enjoyed Sam Kerr's goal, but knew England were on top and much the better team.

The positives are that it really has promoted the game, where 'soccer' is a dirty word to a lot of Western Australians, much laughing about 'rolling around on the floor' 'cheating' etc, so hopefully that has changed some mindsets. To be fair, a lot, I mean a lot of kids play football here, but there are so many competing sports, there can be lots of changing about. AFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, Cricket, Softball, Netball, Lacrosse, not like when I grew up, football in winter, cricket in summer.

I love Australia and am proud to be an Australian, but sports 'fans' here are terrible, 'sing when you're winning' is an apt description, not winning, not interested.
Sadly, a bit like in Scotland, everyone will be Spanish on Sunday....

Lionesses for the win, World Champions!

As a spectacle, yes, and even more so in the long run. Women's football is still very low quality but a lot of that will improve over time.

It's not just the goals though. The pitch is also too big because the players are smaller and slower. There is a ridiculous amount of space at all times which leads to more long balls into space and less penalty for poor touches/passes. More space to take shots etc.

There are a lot of sports where women use different size equipment etc than the men's game so it's not unprecedented. Tennis only play 3 sets instead of 5, athletics there are different size hurdles, javelins, shot putts etc, Womens basketball uses a smaller ball. Seems daft to insist on something that makes the game worse because it requires less skill when it would be such an easy thing to change.
Jebus, I got slaughtered on a previous thread for far less than this and even I actually think you're being very patronising. The standard of women's football has massively progressed in the last few years. It doesn't need smaller goals or smaller pitches. Ffs let it keep progressing as it is, it doesn't need misogynistic men telling the little ladies that they'll never be good enough because they're too small. I've never heard so much bollox in my life.

@Nano , the tennis 3 sets/5 sets is a false comparison.

Both the men's and women's games play best of 3 sets in the majority of tennis tournaments, it's only the 4 Grand Slams where it's 5 sets for the Men.

Guess what? In a lot of those non-Grand Slam tournaments, the women's prize money is lower than the men's, despite playing the same amount of sets.

At the recent Italian Open, the men's winner won $8.5m while the woman's winner only won $3.9m.

Judging the Australian press on the comments in the Aussie Telegraph is like commenting on British options from The Sun. It is not representative of most Aussies. It’s a joke comic. Choose a better paper like the Sydney Morning Herald who say we were much the better team and deserved to win. Not only that many Australians want England to go on and win on Sunday too. .

It really is. They lose to 50 year old blokes before half time, lose to under 12 boys and under 15 boys, the quality isn't there as much as you can argue.
None of those were competitive games, but go on

(I'm assuming your first point is referring to the Wrexham game, in a 7-a-side tournament which featured many ex-USA players too)

It’s low quality compared to the men’s game admittedly, but it’s not exactly something you can compare. The men’s game is worth billions and has been established for such a long time, every training facility, coaches, equipment etc will be significantly better for the men because of the amount of money in the game. The woman’s game is on a completely different level to what it was even 5 years ago, viewing figures, attendances are up by huge amounts year on year. It’s improving at a huge rate

Why the need to compare it with the men’s game? Do people sit booing the female Wimbledon champion as wouldn’t be able to beat Djokovic? The female gold medal winner in 100M is crap as she couldn’t beat the men’s winner.

I think that Mayweather was a rubbish boxer as he would have struggled against Lennox Lewis.

I also don’t like my cat because he’s not a tiger. Boo.

Okay, but my point still stands. The women win less money than the men despite playing the same number of sets.
They do in Italy, but many of the top tournaments have equal prize money and even the Italian Open has committed to equalising prize funds by 2025. Full equality is not there yet, but it's been moving in the right direction for years and is not too far away.

Having coached both boys and girls teams you could tell theat the womens game was going to get stronger and stronger. At 10/11 some of the girls we had were technically better than the womens teams of the time. But the speed of the improvement has really shocked me. The quality of football is on a massive upward curve.
Increased numbers will only help. There are currently 2 girls teams per year group at my club whereas there are 10 boys teams. A bigger pool to pick from will obviously mean you get better pros at the end of the process.
The England success is contuning to drive girls interest in the game and the skill level will continue to rise. It's an exciting time in the women's game and England are at the forefront of that which is superb.

If anyone wants to see some comedy defending, see Mpanzu this weekend (in the men's Premier League).

So you're saying they would beat men in competitive games?
I'm saying the point you were making with those games scorelines is ridiculous.

Why are certain people (you know who you are) so determined to compare women's football to men's football in an attempt to undermine the former? Women's football has improved so much and it's fantastic to see our country doing so well at it.
