Wonderful display from the Lionesses, and absolutely the right result.
However, this hasn't prevented some of the most bilious and bitter comments (already!!) in the Oz press. Jeez - they do seem to be really the world's worst losers as well as terrible winners - no class, and terrible attitude.
The Lionesses have been accused in the Australian Telegraph (just a few minutes ago) of 'roughing up' the Matildas, 'ludicrous' tactics' and hypocrisy (England as a whole) after calling out their cheating in the Ashes ("self-appointed moral judges of global sport') and then making a few healthy midfield tackles, or deliberate and premeditated assaults, as the Aussie morons saw them.
The same newspaper hired a helicopter to over-fly the Lionesses in training and publish/pass on formations etc, coupled with the some of the most provocative and just plain nasty predictions about England as a whole and what was going to happen to the Lionesses.
Even for a tabloid, it's about as gutter as it gets.
The booing from their crowd today was a disgrace too.
After all that, beating them is just SO satisfying!!!
Wingeing poms? Pot calling kettle black methinks!
The Lionesses winning the whole thing will be just PERFECT - I reckon Oz will just melt down. As will the whole of England, but in a much better way!!
The media here (Western Australia & nationally) were getting a bit carried away I thought, lots of bulling the Matildas up, Sam Kerr blah blah, we beat them 2-0 earlier this year, massive crowd etc. They were not really giving England any chance in my opinion.
The commentary followed the same vein, dirty England, cynical, stopping us playing. Not really sure if they were playing to their audience or they hadn't got a clue? Everyone here was a Matildas fan, my wife included. I must admit I enjoyed Sam Kerr's goal, but knew England were on top and much the better team.
The positives are that it really has promoted the game, where 'soccer' is a dirty word to a lot of Western Australians, much laughing about 'rolling around on the floor' 'cheating' etc, so hopefully that has changed some mindsets. To be fair, a lot, I mean a lot of kids play football here, but there are so many competing sports, there can be lots of changing about. AFL, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, Cricket, Softball, Netball, Lacrosse, not like when I grew up, football in winter, cricket in summer.
I love Australia and am proud to be an Australian, but sports 'fans' here are terrible, 'sing when you're winning' is an apt description, not winning, not interested.
Sadly, a bit like in Scotland, everyone will be Spanish on Sunday....
Lionesses for the win, World Champions!
