England’s proposed joint 2030 bid

I for one cannot wait until 2026 - will hopefully be my first world cup. Few nights on the East coast, West Coast, Texas, Canada etc....

I'm pretty sure that this World Cup will be held on the planet Mars, in keeping with FIFAs pledge to promote the game far and wide. Bit of a bummer for the Earth based fans, not only for travel problems and the heat, but also we know that Martians are notoriously homophobic and very much look down on alcohol. Be careful if you do go, as the conditions in Martian jails are fairly dodgy.

Of course it’s an england bid with other nations added there would be no bid without the FA and Wembley.

not sure why we need to add another sovereign nation though in The republic added. That I don’t get.
It's a dual nation bid, not an England. Never mind this other nations added nonsense.

I enjoyed watching football in Texas but it is very warm in the summer, same for Mexico.
Yep, one to be aware of!

Incidentally an ex-colleague of mine with zero interest in football was offered a ticket to Italy v Ireland in NYC 94. Decided to go for the hell of it, and with the city split around 50/50 dependent on ancestral heritage apparently it was an amazing atmosphere.

The party following Ireland's win was suitably excessive I'm led to believe :)

I agree that including ROI adds nothing.
There are 4 FIFA countries in UK, surely that’s enough?
Why would you suddenly introduce a UK football team?
Seriously?

It all feels largely a political exercise to me.

From 2026 it’s being expanded to 42 teams.
So more places might mean they could give all the hosts a spot
Alternatively it would be easier to qualify.
Just a thought.

I'm surprised given the corruption of FIFA any nations would want to spend money of bidding again.

It's an absolute shambles that the next tournament is in Qatar.

I think that's the idea of expanding it, make it easier to qualify and get some smaller/poorer footballing nations involved in the hope that over time it drags up their standards leading to greater competition.

Yes, point taken, money will have been high in their thoughts too. Swell those sponsorship and tv revenue coffers...🤑
I remember reading a detailed article about the World Cup in South Africa. FIFA as usual had loads of exclusive sponsor deals in place. In return the companies were assured of monopolies during the tournament. It meant that local vendors in host cities were not allowed within a certain vicinity of any stadium. FIFA should be encouraging tournaments being unique to the host country, not increasing the sterile corporate atmosphere.

The whole voting process has changed since Qatar were awarded the world cup. Over 200 member associates are eligible to vote now, rather then the 20 odd FIFA execs before. I suppose there's still room for corruption to take place, but it seems less likely to affect the final result now it takes a bit more than swaying 2-3 people to throw you their vote.

Hopefully that does result in less corruption. I suspect it just changes from being fat cat corruption to another form.

Qatar World Cup. Jesus wept.
ridiculous decision.

in this country, we have the stadia already. The infrastructure is in place. For a mere £300 you can get the train anywhere 😂

48 teams? You can increase the number of teams participating but you can't maintain the same standard. I think there'd be an enormous number of games between countries that aren't very good, aren't very interesting and wouldn't attract many fans.

I'm sure none of the 4 or 5 host FAs would really want to preside over a series of games where there are few fans and no interest for the neutral. We know these tickets will be very expensive. How many Brits would be prepared to pay >£100 for (say) Suriname versus Qatar? Turkmenistan versus Georgia?
