Engel sounds like he’s playing well

If Boro start to play as a team we might see a decent player there. We've got a defence, midfield and attack that didn't appear to be supporting each other on Saturday.

The midfield isn't knitting the side together, too slow to get back and too slow to get around the box. We're not moving up and down the pitch as a team and we're therefore easy to exploit.

How on earth did he get those scores. I thought he was terrible. He got done repeatedly by the man he was marking including the 2nd goal. He created nothing going forward either. The only thing he did succesfully was play short square or backwards balls in side.

He got absolutely tortured all game. Virtually everything created came from down that side. No idea how anyone could score those ratings or how they are calculated.

To be honest he hasn't started well, that said non of our team have started well.
Hard to totally judge him on his few starts, however it does make the Bola sale look strange, he was a steady Championship left back.

Interesting they've given the highest score for the whole league on Saturday to the keeper we faced. It was awful on Saturday but the fact their keeper was MOTM does mitigate it a bit I suppose.
Interesting that my pick for Noddy’s Notebook was their keeper too.. I thought he’d done great.

Also interesting that I think Lukas Engel is going to be great.. a few nervous moments aside and the stattos seem to give a little more weight to that.

Also.. how I’ve been saying that Paddy McNair wants shipping out and Dael Fry is a complete fanny.. that seems to translate into that statistical black hole there on the right side of defence.

Maybe I do know what I’m talking about after all!

He wasn’t starting and was looking for a fresh challenge methinks.. also.. M O N E Y could have seen the opportunity to pull some money in and bring in some promising replacements.

McNair and Fry. The elephants in the room.

The signing of Bangura says more about Coulson I think.

Engel is good.. he’ll come good.
‘The Danish George Friend’
I hope you're right, because if you're not it raises big questions around how we came to sign him in the first place, but from what I've seen I'm not as confident.

I agree that the midfield hasn't clicked (Howson was way below his best at the weekend), but it's hard to be positive and play at a decent tempo when the front 4 have so little movement and don't create angles for a pass.

No one wants to speak about McNair not being up to scratch.. he was expensive, he’s on big wages, we ‘snatched him’ from Sunderland. Paddy McNightmare.. ship him out to Greece.

Dael Fry.. the sweetheart, the local boy done good, sound as a pound.. HARDEN THE FCUK UP!! he seems very much protected here and maybe way too deep into his comfort zone. Get him out on loan to Turkey.. a season on a testicle only diet, playing in a ring of fire! WHAT A GAP YEAR!

Reggie Cannon & Axel Tuanzebe.. come on down!

I’m basing this on.. his marauding run straight after his error against West Brom, it nearly resulted in a goal.. if he’d have scored that.. we have a £15m left back straight away.

The timing of his tackles, how good he is in the air.. Woodgate esque clearence/last minute salvage.

Oh yeah, I’ve met his family too.. good people. Great personalities.. good eggs. He’s solid pro who is still getting up to speed.. as with the rest of our 15 replacements.

I think our transfer business has been immense.. we have pulled off the near impossible. Hopefully Carrick and the team can get them up to speed and playing together in a system that suits.

This.

He was tortured by Smyth but got zero support throughout the game. Reminded me of the time Woodgate hung Bola out to dry although Engel coped better than Bola.
On Saturday he came up against a difficult opponent, it happens. My earlier sarcasm was aimed at 'team of the week' because if Engel faired the best of all the Champo left backs goodness knows how all the others got on.

I'll have some of what you're drinking 🤣

I'm not convinced by some yet, to differing degrees.

I think Rogers has lots of potential, very athletic and strong and has talent, but doesn't influence games enough.

Silvera needs to work on his strength and his decision making, but I think he lots of potential too.

Latte Lath hasn't had lots of service, but his finishing seems to be his weakness. That aside I think he'll cause problems and score goals, to a modest degree this season.

But Engel is the one I'm not convinced by, not yet anyway. What I've seen and I qualify that by recognising its very early days.

I think teams will target him, as QPR did, which will either make or break him.

O'Brien will be a big player for us BTW.

Lukas Engel - George Friend
Lewis O'Brien - Adam Forshaw
Morgan Rogers - Marcus Tavernier
Latte Laff - Chuba Akpom
Sam Greenwood - Patrick Bamford
Terrel Agyemang - Emerson
Rav Van Den Berg - Robert Huth
Josh Coburn - Fabrizio Ravanelli
Sam Silvera - Joseph-Désiré Job
Alex Bangura - Franck Queudrue
Alex Gilbert - Aaron Ramsey

the only thing is.. what stage they are at their careers.. Lewis O'Brien is playing peak Adam Forshaw.. where as others are a little earlier on.

Rav Van Den Berg & Terrel Agyemang will be like the ones that got away.. but we ended up signing them. Dya know like when we we could have had Nemanja Matić

Engels and Silvera looked completely out of their depth against QPR - neither should be starting until they have a good look at what this league is about and are introduced slowly as subs or in the cup games

Thought Engels was much improved (going forward at least) when McGree came on and actually passed the the ball to him when he was up the pitch, enabling him to put in a couple of decent crosses late in the game.
McGree is so important in getting us to attack down the left side of the pitch instead of just the right when he isn't selected.
Last year McGree constantly put Giles in some great positions to put crosses in.
Silvera just seems to put his head down and run at defenders but nearly always inside and his passes to Engels are usually just backwards giving him nowhere to go but back to Lenihan.

It's not been a great start to his career for us.

I wonder if it's concerning the fact we were happy to splash out £1m on another LB, only a few games after we signed Engels.

He obviously needs time to adapt, new country, new league etc.

But so far, he's not impressed.

His performance at the weekend rang alarm bells for me.

Players often need a chance when coming from a foreign league, but some of the fundamentals are worrying.

The way Smith tied him him knots was far too easy and QPR obviously saw him as a weakness as they repeatedly played the ball in behind him and turned him round.

The signing of Bangura maybe suggests the club feel the same - it will be interesting to see who starts the next game.
I'd agree, he could become a cracking player for us but at the moment he's struggling in all areas. Not adventure in his play (just passing it back/inside at every opportunity), poor defensively, not much pace. I believe Bangura has more pace so i can see him coming into the side straight away. Engle might benefit from a bit more settling in time.
