Elizabeth Oakshot!!

I think it's dreadfully insensitive to say it like that, however -

1. The average lifespan of people in the UK is about 83 years
2. The average age of people dying WITH Covid is 83 years, and the modal age is 84
3. The 100k number includes everyone whose death certificate mentions Covid, irrespective of the major cause

If you can reconcile these three facts with Isabel Oakeshott being wrong, then please explain it to me. I'm not suggesting what she says is wise or compassionate, but as far as I can see, she is right.
Not the time for your boring, dull, emotionless blather. Fingers crossed you don't lose a family member or friend to covid who was perfectly healthy and only in their 60s. Your stats will look quite hollow then.

Oh the tory is strong in this one she is very much the true blue type I do remember this was the kind compassionate soul who suggested poor people should eat porridge as its only £1 a bag.

isn't she with one of them?

I don't see how thats relevant. Talking about death statistics as a wider topic doesn't mean it isn't a terrible tragedy that each and every one of them has died. Some of them will have been 100+ years old and would have probably died of something else between now and last March, that doesn't make it less sad for the families but it also doesn't stop it being true.

I haven't heard the Oakeshott comments but, knowing what she's like, I can well imagine her delivery was blunt and badly framed, but it doesn't mean her facts were wrong does it? Facts are just facts. If her facts are wrong, fine, but thats to be discussed and proven, there NEEDS to be discussion.

I feel like this death toll figure is used in a way that isn't helpful. Sure, there are lots of deaths every day and that's terrible, but why was it headline news that the UK passed 100,000 deaths yesterday? It was hardly unexpected was it, given that we were on 99,000+ the day before. Another example of the media wanting to terrify the population imho. They want us to sit at home glued to the news and that's only good for them and their profit margins.

Her attempts to put the blame on lifestyle choices is an attempt to absolve the blame on the government and project it to the unhealthy, overweight citizens. The reality is if the government had done it's job and protected people from a deadly infection then those the majority of those 'fat people' would still be alive and some might have gotten healthier through being scared of this disease.

It's funny that the likes of Oakeshott think if a large proportion of the UK population is overweight, that this doesn't reflect on the government.

That's a good point but it reflects on a sequence of governments, stretching back decades, and the country as a whole. As much as I'd love to blame it all on Boris, I don't think we can.

You do know it says 'New member' under your name don't you?
First time on the new site, took ages to get registered but I was on the old site for well over ten years.
I am no hard right Covid denier, I'm just of the opinion that lockdowns affect the poorest people disproportionately and will ruin a whole generation's education and future prospects. The mental health crisis and inevitable suicides that stem from these decisions taken and supported by people who have not lost one pay slip whilst sitting in their big houses on furlough or WFH does not seem to have been given any thought at all.

No disagreement from me on that point Atypical. Decades of utter rubbish.

lockdowns affect the poorest people disproportionately
that is a simplification, I mean there are some very well off people losing their businesses and maybe homes because of lockdown. What I do find appalling is the number of people that push this statement, yet vote Tory, vote for austerity that impacts the poorest, vote for reduction in social systems that exclusively impact the poorest, vote for rejection of immigrants, some of the very poorest people in the world, yet, they claim to care about the impact on poor people. It's rank hypocrisy, which means this probably isn't about protecting the poor.

ruin a whole generation's education and future prospects
It's been harmed, to a degree, but we should be getting better at educating virtually. The business world has been virtual for quite a while and the way school age children are now getting conversant with platforms like Teams is an invaluable part of their education.

mental health crisis and inevitable suicides
again, some truth to this, although I haven't seen any quantification of suicide increases. Again though, support for these have neglected by the Tories and their supporters for the last decade. Mental health funding has been slashed, social services that can identify mental health issues destroyed, support for homeless who are often at that extreme end of mental health issues has been decimated. This government and it's supporters cannot be taken at face value when they make these claims. Also the positives are that it has brought out some community spirit as solo-dwellers are supported by neighbours, elderly people get support through neighbourhood schemes.

I've been in this game too long, to take these government and PR led messages at face value. If they cared about mental health and the poor they've had a decade to help them, instead they hurt them.

What is the relevance of adding her middle name other than to show you are a bigot?
What's bigoted about referencing someone by their full name?

The one listed in her wiki entry.
The one listed at Companies house.

I suspect you're just making the accusation without knowing what the word actually means.
