Elephant in the room

I have no problem with Jones contribution, especially with the marking constraints placed on him, for me the problem is that he is overused when the balls could go to left wing to an unmarked player, he often finds himself in a position ahead of players, with nobody to pass to, he could be a little cuter sometimes like late on yesterday he stumbled to stay on his feet after being clipped and consequently the ref didn’t give the free kick.

People said the same about Traore when he first came in the team. That his crossing was rubbish and no end product. Now he is playing in the Premier League. Jones already linked with Crystal Palace.

Tell me which Boro player has played consistently well this season?
Collectively they are average at best.
Cue: the lack of support to Forss and Muniz yesterday.
Forss is a good player at this level - but we have seen little of it due to a hole called "midfield" and complete lack of service to the forwards.
Its missing the big picture which leads to people blaming individuals.

Jones is just not good enough for the championship.

His highlights reel from each game never exceeds 30 seconds and is virtually invisible when crooks doesn’t play alongside or with him.

The number of miss hit crosses or failing to beat the first man is so frustrating. He hasn’t progressed as a player one iota, in fact he has done backwards.

He was a passenger today.
I thought he had his best game of the season at Wigan, along with Whatmore he tore into Wigan. Against Huddersfield he was again running at opponents with freedom that his winger role gave him. Then fans started to get on his back. Why?

He’s a good player. This thread reminds me of what so many posters on here used to say about Tav, who now complain and point fingers at the gaping hole in the middle of our midfield. They’ll be doing the same when Jones is sold in the next couple of years, pointing at the gap on our right wing wondering where it all went so badly wrong.

Wise up. Jones is so far from the problem it’s unreal.

the highs of Jones were overstated last year, and this OP is overstating him as a weakness. The truth is, he lacks consistency particularly in decision making with and without the ball, but he offsets that with some pace, trickery and effort.

He's a championship level player, but can be identified as a weakness in key games

I wouldn’t go as far as to say isn’t good enough for the Championship but he’s certainly living off past glories at the moment and there seems to be a fair few on here having rose tinted glasses on regarding him.

Did you watch the game at Wigan? Less than a week ago - Jones scored the first goal and took a Championship defence apart through large parts of the match. He was playing with freedom as a winger and not a wing back. To play with that freedom he surely doesn't need his own fans on his back.

Yeah…..where his crossing is rubbish and he has no end product!😀

Like the entire squad he probably overperformed last season and has underperformed this.

I do think he was a beneficiary last season of Wilder's desire for the wide men to get to the goal line and cut balls back for simple tap ins. For whatever reason, that approach either hasn't worked this season or has been abandoned.

I must admit, I'm not sold on him playing as winger (yet). The difficulty with playing him further up the pitch is that he is generally marked tightly when receiving the ball. It can be quite difficult to generate momentum from that position, which has led to him playing safe a little in the last couple of games. He can, of course, push past his man but risks running out of pitch if he does so.

When playing wing back, his starting position was deeper and he could generally (by playing triangles with the RCM) play himself into good positions to either take on the opponent left back, or push past them.

It's a tricky one, as WB clearly amplified his defensive vulnerability, but for me it's vital that we get his starting position right if he's going to play as a winger.

Absolutely this.

Tav was our best player but there was threads after every game giving him pelters.

Now we all miss him so so much. What a player. We all knew it all along 🤔

It’s bizarre that our best players get so much scrutiny. Some of our fans expect way to much of our better players.

Palace monitoring him allegedly. Must be bad judges to some on here!

He will get better and he is showing promise as it is. Vital outlet for us.

I don't see the comparison with tav he played over 130 games for us and a regular over 4 seasons. He had alot to his game; work rate, tackling, passing ability, pace, a leader, a will to win. He didn't deserve to be knocked.

Jones has at about 3 months where he was good. he lacks the ability to finish, cross, pass and defend the right side. He does have pace and ability to go passed people but doesn't do it enough. He needs to improve and improve quick for me. This isn't just a recent dip in form, he was awful for at least the last quarter of the previous season.

I think if he had more competition for his place he would have been out the team but that could have also had a positive effect on him.

He has promise but needs to kick on.

I don't think asking a winger to be able to cross or pass is asking too much... If as people say hes one of our better players.

He's one of the few players we have who actually takes risks, whether that is going past a player, making a forwards pass, making a cross or having a shot. That means he loses the ball more than most players and it stands out. I don't mind that though, you have to take risks to achieve anything.

His crossing is poor for a winger but the rest of his game is good (sometimes very good) for the level he is at and at least he has a go.

It's not his fault the rest of the team only play the safe balls.

2 things I find frustrating, sometimes I believe Jones's decision making could be better but what I find most frustrating is our fans.. if we had a player who didn't take risks or try taking people on then they'd be moaning, we have a player who isn't afraid of attacking defenders and instead of applauding that and getting behind the player we shout, boo and moan about him. (Not all fans by the way, I personally love to see a player like Jones trying something that no-one else in the team does)

Just because people are critical of him it doesn't mean they don't get behind the player and also love the fact he takes people on. I dont think anyone is critical of him taking players on. Its what he does after and more often than not he flatters to deceive.

Maddison mentioned in the wigan game, hes never seen a player try and pass through players as much as jones. His decision making is bizarre at times.

I didnt see the wigan game as I was in the US, and ESPN showed Blyth Spartans v Wrexham in the FA cup.

But I have seen every other home game, and get frustrated with his promise and ability and the lack of that translating into what I think his potential could be.

He needs a higher level of focused coaching to develop him, a bit like Pullis did for Traore, other wise he will drift away into obscurity, which would be a crying shame.
