Electric Ovens

My main oven has just died with a whimper. It's lasted around 10 years, but I'm going to have to open the warchest and swoop for a new one before tomorrow's transfer deadline.

I do have an air fryer which I use a lot of the time, but there are times I need the oven so it needs replacing.

Having a quick look online it seems there are a lot around the £400 (Hotpoint, Indesit, Beko) and then a jump to £800-£1000 (AEG, Neff). These seem to have the exact same features so I am confused as to what the jump in price would get me. When buying goods I usually like to go for the higher end of the mid market, but there doesnt seem to be one with ovens. Can any of the Fmttm experts help me as to what I should be looking out for.

We had a decent Bosch double oven , did everything you would really want unless you wanted a steam function. Wife wanted new kitchen about a year ago and picked a double Smeg oven, one of which microwaves. Cost a fortune. The function knobs are a pain in the ****. I wouldn’t care but she literally only used the oven for bloody oven chips. I would definitely go cheap, unless you are a budding James Martin.

We have 2 bosch ovens. No issues but they are only 2 yr old. Still look as good as the day they were fitted though.

Not sure about the difference in the features but our NEFF oven is 12 years old now and we have had no issues

I have fixed our teknic double overn twice in the last couple of years. The element in the main oven went. That was an easy fix. The grilling element in the second over started bending with metal fatigue, that was a bitch to replace.

If it's elements or fans that have stopped working they are quite easy fixes. There is generally a row of electrical connectors behind the back panel. Take a picture before you disconnect then buy the part and fit.

The guy that fixed it was really good and showed me how easy it was. He said some can be a pain and you have to access them from the back, but mine was a doddle.

Does the board have an opinion on Rangemaster ovens ?
We have had ours 15 years and never had any problems and it still looks good but it is far to large for our everyday needs as one of the ovens is basically used for storage and the 2 larger gas rings are rarely used. This is my opinion as the wife disagrees but if it needed replacing I'd be looking at a cheaper option as they seem very expensive nowadays'

Unless you do an insane amount of cooking, the way forward is surely having a "good enough" oven to do Christmas dinners and occasional larger items, with the rest of oven duties picked up by an air fryer. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to use, faster to cook, cooks better etc

Obviously you still need a hob mind

We've just revamped the kitchen and I was looking at Rangemaster but in the end decided to go for a Belling at almost half the cost.
Looks great. No problems with performance whatsoever to date. I'm glad I didn't spend the extra £1k for the equivalent Rangemaster.

I’ve got a Bosch. Previous owner of my house bought it, not me.
Seems alright, But there is a squeaky bearing on the fan. The bulb has also gone, but the glass cover is seized on the thread, I’m reluctant to put too much on it to undo it for fear of shattering the glass. When it eventually dies it’ll probably be replaced with a cheaper Beko etc.
