Always a divisive figure but does anyone actually think he's doing a decent job? All the stats say that Middlesbrough is going backwards rather than making any progress and this was happening before the pandemic. Was speaking to someone yesterday who used to shout from the rooftops about Preston but now thinks he's useless. They said that Preston is like a civic mayor on steroids rather than an elected mayor. I guess this is summed up by his marketing type content he runs on social media. He's more interested in social media engagement and interaction rather than doing anything meaningful. For some reason he keeps asking people if they ever went to Alan Fearnley's record shop. He must have templates saved and forgets what he's previously posted. Same goes for things such as Captain Cook monument. He obviously spends a significant amount of time on these things and you'd have to question the salary he receives from the taxpayer.

In the last week people have been asking him speak out about the exams fiasco and support students who were downgraded . He stayed silent and then came out and said that exam results don't really matter.

Sadly he's far from the only one. The willingness of politicians to tow the party line even when it's blindingly obvious the party is in the wrong is depressing. Utterly spineless and about as far from "leadership" as you can get.

Of course with this government in particular any criticism or even questioning of them is going to be severely career limiting. Leads to an incompetent Cabinet but at least makes most of the self centred career driven ***** easy to identify. Not that the "Great British Public" will notice, remember or care.
 
Him and Anthony High are the same MO. Blame everything on labour, talk about tough action and be as bolshy as possible and loud whenever cameras or reporters are on them, but not actually doing much of note.

Be interesting to see how much of a chain round our neck these office blocks are going to be seeing as office demand is going to drop like a stone. Same with Houchen’s airport and keeping the books sealed.

remember that High is Middlesbrough’s “drugs tsar”, so how is the town doing in its battle against drugs? Not very well. He was too busy trying to get elected as an MP and slating labour on social media to be doing much about that.

lot of the independents that backed them initially are now against them.

With Preston, he’s an independent, apparently, so should have no party line to follow. But he certainly does like to follow one particular party’s lines.

Agree about national politicians.

I'd actually completely forgotten he was an "independent". If he's independent, I'd hate to see how a Tory mayor would behave.
 
His allies are local Tory figures so his priority will be to support them. Rumour has it that during the pandemic he's been staying at his luxury Spanish villa (n)
 
The bloke is a pillock and so is his mate Anthony High. Everything he does simply furthers his or his mates' business interests.
 
The Gazette focus on him and Middlesbrough council makes the town and the paper a tragic joke. Constant bollax about the life and times of Andy Preston doing nothing of any significance. Stockton rarely mumurs compared to these narcississts. Welcome TRHG good hands kidda.
 
A poundshop Peter Kay whose sole purpose seems to be posting "do you remember Captain Cook's ship" type posts on social media, which is good because he obviously has loads of time after addressing all Middlesbrough's problems and inequalities.

Asking this morning who everyone’s favourite Boro player at Ayresome Park was...

I don’t mind that kind of thing in principle, as it can show an elected official in touch. But here, I’m far from convinced it’s sincere. Very calculated.

Plus, the whole main thing about him doing a good job as Mayor is suspiciously absent.

Gets and easy ride off the Gazette because he gives them good headlines. They don’t bother doing any investigate stuff any more.
 
A lot of Preston's posts are timed for when people are waking up or going to bed so it's obviously calculated. I guess his strategy is to use nostalgic posts to gain the attention of his followers. The fact he feels the need to do this is worrying in itself. Surely if he was doing a good job it would speak for itself and he wouldn't have to concentrate putting out pointless things on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. What is he actually doing on a day to day basis?
 
His wiki doesn't say anything about his birth or upbringing other than him conning people by using his parents' Middlesbrough address instead of his own. What is his provenance?
