Early Retirement.

I took it and never regretted it. But you do need a retirement project otherwise you can get very bored. Part time work is a good suggestion, you could volunteer, or start a new hobby. A friend of mine is now a good wood turner.

Getting old(er) in general scares me, but the one thing I’m looking forward to is retiring as early as possible. Could not think of much else I’d rather not do than retire and get a part time job for ‘something to do’. I can’t wait to not have to work!

You guys must have really good private pensions to retire before 60. Im almost mortgage free but will have to keep on working for a few years after to build up a nice nest egg.

I have a decent work’s pension which I continue to build up so I am lucky in that regard but I won’t be rich when I retire, but then I will be a single bloke with an Adult child so hopefully no major expenses required. 🤞

Assuming you were mortgage free how much do you need ( net a month ) to retire comfortably … holidays , run a car , eat out now and then and have a season ticket and sky ?

im due to retire in July , wont miss the daily grind ..
I will look for a part time job just to keep me partly busy - whats the best way of looking for a part time job ? is it simply the Job centre ?
not done anything like this for 44 years : -)

There's loads of variables, most important one being what your work history is?

Volunteering for a while is an option ( if you don't have front facing customer service experience for example )

Depending on where you live means seasonal work might be an option too.

If you don't need the money please just try and be retired for a while first. If you need a list of things to keep you busy let me know and I'll send you my list 😁

im defo having a few months break before applying for a PT job have a stack of things to do around the house first : -)

I am finishing next year and really fancy getting a job as a secret shopper or Hotel reviewer. I have spent 30 years travelling with work so would love to be able to official mark hotels on their performance. As long as its only a few days a month then it would be a lovely pass time.

There was an offer of redundancy for 1 out 4 of us in the same job, one of the lads beat me too it, but they have listened to my request after moaning on a bit and they gave in . So I thought I will take it.
Been there a good few years and the package is good, so I will finish on Friday. Full time on the hobby horse🚀

UTB UTLP.
What age did u go at ? I’m mid 50s now don’t want to go to early or leave it too late ?

I was laid off Dec 2022 aged 59, and decided then, to take a year off from work, doing DIY jobs around the house and garden, loved it, got into a routine and did not miss my old stressful job.
My Mrs is 54, she works full time for the M.O.D, she gets up at 5am, I do the same and go to the gym for 6.0am, she's going to retire at 60.

We have decided that I don't want or need full time work, we are mortgage free and have savings, I'm now starting my 2nd year of no wages, but you don't spend much, when you're just potting about, one day i might look for a part time job, a few days a week, just for a bit of pocket money.

But my advice is to just keep busy, have some sort of routine, take up a hobby and enjoy a stress free life.

Aiming for 56/57, on track as I can be but also aware that sometimes life happens.
I'm pretty sure I won't struggle to fill my time, its hard to find 37 hours to actually do some work in at the moment :ROFLMAO:

Get a part time job. You become irrelevant and invisible when you retire.it's also not such a shock to the system if you take on a p/ t job.
Good luck and well done either way.
A friend of mine retired about 18 months ago. He couldn’t wait to go and his motivation at work dipped quite a lot on the run up to him leaving. He could not wait to go. He has a very good pension and could do what he liked really. He came back after 15 months and does a couple of days a week and he said he feels much happier now. I dont think its sad that he has returned. Some people have a greater sense of self-worth whilst working, no matter what age. Its all about balance of physical health, mental health and their sense of wellbeing. I can retire now but the Mrs is a bit younger and she enjoys what she does. Things may change for me but at present but I plan to go within the next couple of years. I will be 58 and may come back for a couple of days a week. I am currently buying all sorts of stuff for hobbies when I do finally go.

I retired at 55 in the middle of the pandemic. Had to access my pension to support myself and then my business went bust. Moved back to be closer to family and live on my own. I know my pension will support me for the next 15 years after that, who knows.
So my options are, live a short life of excess and debauchery or look for a part time job.
I find that the idea of a job creates some structure to the day and also provides some different company to chat to. I do have a lot of hobbies to keep me busy but I lack some motivation.
Anyway, off to the pub now, wont be back till late.
