Doncaster Airport closing

Being backed by Truss and her transport secretary last week.
Since Wizzair pulled out, the airport has to rely on Tui. The blame for the demise rests solely with Peel Holdings whose ambition has always been for the airport to deal with freight. Commercial traffic was only agreed so Peel could get the infrastructure to the airport more accessible. Even when the airport first opened, Peel were demanding deals with airlines that were on par with more established airports at the time, therefore airlines such as Virgin refused to agree any deals. Peel Holdings have always been the problem

Yes sounds all desperate stuff. Wrong place for an airport, wrong time sadly. Couldn't make it pay. What future for Tees Durham Valley?

It seems @Redpete, according to the railways thread, approves of privatised rail but doesn't like the sound of privatised airports. The amount of money Teesside Airport has had thrown at it it may as well be publicly owned.

Or the most likely answer is he is a Tory and doesn't really have his own opinions, just ones forced upon him by the Daily Mail.

Sad but perhaps not completely unexpected news. Despite living in South Yorkshire for 10 years I've never once used the airport.

Wizz did have some interesting destinations but the slots for arrivals/departures were pretty terrible. Landing into Poland at 0200/0300 in the morning and similar back just didn't really work for a short weekend break. We've never done packages so TUI didn't really appeal.

That said, impact on connectivity and job losses is pretty grim.

Not sure if any work is done centrally on strategy for airports? We're a small country which doesn't really require internal air transport (maybe to/from the very extremes). It feels like a handful of international hubs may work better going forward?

As for transport links, it's only marginally longer for me to get to Manchester airport than Donny despite one being approximately 15 miles further away.

That's like apples and oranges, you can't compare the two. No one is suggesting closing the railways.
Plus no need to get personal, I am quite capable having my own opinion thankyou.

And as a good Socialist shouldn't you be applauding government money being invested in a local service or would you prefer it was closed just because that money came from a " Nasty Tory "

It's not government money.

South Sheffield, door to door (using PT) as follows:

Doncaster: 1 hr 32
Manchester: 1 hr 49

Maybe not marginal after all but not great all told.

A direct rail line from Sheffield would probably get to Doncaster airport in around 20 mins?

I'm not a socialist (y)

Sorry for calling you a Tory if you aren't one. If you are, no need to be embarrassed (y)
