Does anyone actually think that was an improvement?

As they say football is a result based basis - win and everything is fine.

Possibly we were a bit more focused last night - focused to grind out a win which we should have done at say Stoke and ground out a draw at Watford and something at QPR and Reading. Rather than having a great expected goals statistic but be in the bottom 3.

Marginal improvement. Fewer gaffs and better discipline from CH's.
Couldn't expect a great deal more in the circumstances.
I'd take a draw at Millwall.

It was great to get a much needed result last night but I can't say that last night was any better than I've witnessed under Wilder.
I genuinely think that we were better against Rotherham than we were last night.

We created very little and defended poorly in the second half. The clean sheet was a result of brum being terrible rather than us being solid.

There were a couple of positives to take from the game:
1. Hackney held is own and showed some bursts of creativity. I thought it was encouraging league debut.
2. Steffen had a better game. Looked a bit more assured from crosses.
3. Nice to see the introduction of Akpom and I think the front two held the ball up relatively well in the first half.

But apart from the above I can't see what was different. We weren't much value for our win and could have easily drew or lost that game. We were actually much more solid against Rotherham where we didn't give the a sniff at goal and actuallyu created 3 really good chances. I don't think we really created any good chances last night. The goal was a result of some sloppy defending from a set piece.

Don't get me wrong. We really needed those 3 points and I'm happy that we got them, but I'm not coming away particularly encouraged by the performance. I'm surprised at how many people are saying on social media that they thought we were great and it was a massive improvement. I just didn't see it. Gazette ratings giving all the players 7s and 8s was mind blowing for me.
Having watched us take the lead against Watford and then disappear for long periods, this was a better result. Remember we lost to the bottom of the league Coventry and beat a team that, before the game were above us. What is your point? They played more like at team, Steffen played well, defence was solid and we seemed to know what they were doing. What is your point? Given the display just four days before, losing to the bottom of the league, this was a marked improvement. Not promotion form or a top six place, Millwall is the next test.

I wasn’t there but watched it on Sky, I thought we got the ball up the pitch quicker than in recent games and looked much the better for some energy in midfield, well done Hackney.

Still massive room for improvement, McNair looks like a rabbit in the headlights at times, he looks a shadow of what he’s capable of.

Leo’s substitutions were well timed and logical, Wilder’s substitutions used to baffle me at times.
Funny how we differ watching games, I thought apart from the odd clearance Paddy did well, but Diijksteel was like a rabbit in the headlights and lost the ball a lot. I also think we went to 'consolidating the win' mode a bit early (brining on more defensive players) but as it didn't cost us it was probably the right decision.

After the two bell whiffs on the pitch, a slew of substitutions and motioning to Steffan to release the ball quicker a few times, I felt sure that there would be about eight minutes added on and we'd concede.

Agreed but there were a few improvements ie use of Subs but still some silly mistakes. Dijksteel very nearly gave a goal away with a sloppy "pass" without looking and Watmore was kamikazi head down when a simple pass could have produced a goal. Work in progress but as someone said "the squad is the squad"

Last night was very similar to the Rotherham performance.

And yet we won.

TBF, I thought we should have beaten Rotherham.

I don't claim we played well then, but we created a few chances and should have taken one. I didn't think they troubled us much.

I thought Rotherham was an awful game where we played really poorly but as said on chances should have won 3-0 but didn't.

I thought last night's opposition were better and if we had played the same as Rotherham they would have beat us. They had some very good footballers on show last night but we clearly did a lot of shape work in that 48 hours which Wilder seems to have ignored as we were wide open on many of the goals we conceded under him.

Also our use of direct balls was much better by having Chuba and Muniz together than it was against Rotherham. I was worried when we brought on forrss and watmore on as if we continued with direct balls the wouldn't compete, however we just did what teams do against us playing balls in the channels andgot in behind them.

I think it was considerably better as we won 1-0 against better opposition.

Rotherham we had 13 chances to their 3.

Last night Brum has one more chance than us.

We were probably better overall against Rotherham.

Although Bham created chances I was a lot less nervous about us when we were defending. Whether that is anything to do with the change of manager or no Jones in defense or a figment of my imagination or ive just stopped caring I have no idea.

Not sure what the OP is trying to achieve with this thread. Very strange indeed 🙂
What's odd about discussing whether we improved or not? Seems to be a mixed bag of opinions on the thread. If you look past the self righteousness of the posters, it seems most people would agree the performance wasn't much better than we seen previously other than the result.

What prompted the thread was when I read the article on Gazette Live and they gave 3 x 6s, 6 x 7s and 2 x 8s for the starting line up. I thought that was extremely generous. The performance was poor in my opinion. As somebody that is usually quite optimistic, I was interested in other's thoughts on it.

As a benchmark, in the Rotherham game, Gazette Live awarded 7 x 5s and 4 x 6s. Were we really that much better against Birmingham? I think if anything we were slightly worse but got a result.

I think we were excellent considering the shambolic state Wilder has left this club in.

Tighter at the back and more threatening up front. Even the midfield looked better with Hackney providing a bit of quality on the ball.

So yes, much better in my opinion.
