Doak is the difference

Tonight, two men went towards Doak every time he got the ball which freed up another player. We nearly scored from this when Ayling found acres of space to cross for LL header, only for the keeper to pull off a brilliant save.
Also the McGree chance during the 1st half. Doak is dribbling with the ball and Racic goes across to close him down, leaving Azaz unmarked in the centre. Azaz then has the shot and McGree should have scored with the follow-up.

Azaz isn't shining yet for me. He's steady and not a bad footballer, I would just like to see him speed things up a little. He quite often slows down our attacks by taking too many touches. Hopefully it'll come. Carrick obviously rates him highly.
I don't see this - other than one poor touch in the second half I thought Azaz was great.

3 times found Lath with forward passes but Lath could not get the first touch was not quite right. Also found borges out wide to set up Burgzorg. Found Doak a number of times.

He had the two decent efforts on goal (one leads to our best chance of the game).

I think Doak and McGree have been the difference in the last two games - Riley provides balance and cover to our left back and Doak is just going to be a nightmare for full backs in this league. You don’t see many wide players like him anymore who just like to take on the defender instead of playing the ball inside or backwards

Think it's more McGree. We finally look like we have balance with him on the left.

He also gives us the extra quality we don't have when he's out. He pops up everywhere. Vital when trying to crack these low blocks. Also the best of a bad bunch defensively on the left.

Doak has been good. He's a breath of fresh air to how Jones plays. That's not a pop at Izzy. Just nice to see a Wide Man play as an actual winger. It's a dying art these days. Coached out of them for more possession based (Hamilton).

We have to be careful with Doak. I still expect Izzy or Forss to start plenty of games. He's only 18 and recoving from nearly 6 months out. You have to manage expectations with someone that age. His form will dip or he'll make some wrong decisions. Still very raw (that's not a bad thing ).

Keeping McGree fit will be the defining thing this season. He completely transforms this team

Agreed. We have someone on the left who receives and circulates the ball in tight areas, tracks back to cover and initiates attacks. With him, Azaz and Jones/Doak we have movement and guile across the inside forwards. For me, Conway and Lath are dukeing it out for the striker role.

Doak causes havoc which is great to see, hopefully his final chance creating passes improve which I’m sure they will, just hope it’s while he’s still with us.

Azaz was absolutely critical to that win last night, a poor through ball in the second half provoked a massive pile on, but his close control and first time intricate passing with McGree and Hackney was a joy to watch at times.

Doak looked knackered and I’d have brought Jones on earlier to give Ayling a bit more support once we’d scored, but Izzy was excellent in his cameo, great contribution to the win.

I think we have the balance perfect with McGree - He covers so much ground during a game. I'd love to see his heatmap know his miles covered last night.

His positioning also allows Hackney and Azaz more freedom, which has shown in Hackney's goals - Azaz probably should have had a couple of goals in the last two games too.

Doak - Azaz - McGree are the front three I want all season - but I think we'll need to wrap McGree up in cotton wool to achieve it.

Having Forss back on the bench is going to be an interesting one for Doak/Jones too... unless he's always been seen as the backup for ELL.

Agree and I hope this puts to bed the idea that Conway is a no.10. He’s Latte Lath’s backup.

Clean sheets are the difference. If we had conceded a daft goal after 20 mins it becomes immeasurably harder for us to break down a team with 11 men camped behind the ball with something to hang on to.
Our defence has really tightened up starting from the last couple of months of last year z we’ve had 9 cleansheets in 19 games with just 16 conceded. That’s a better rate than the promoted teams last year but they did it over a 46 game season….but the indicators are good.
