Do you belive in god/ a god

I dont subscribe to a religion. I'm sure most were started by people who genuinely felt a connection to something deeper, but are now merely a means of social control. However I am and have been my whole life fascinated by modern scientific theories and the thought of what it all means. My own opinion, after nearly 50 years of pondering, is that the whole universe is one living entity and while we live we are just a part of the universe that has temporarily separated from the rest but reunites on 'death'. We are all one, as the Buddhists say, we just don't know it while we are here.
All the elements of our bodies were formed in stars over billions of years and multiple star lifetimes, and have also existed in many previous life forms. When we die it carries on.

The burden of proof is on the one making the claim and people who believe in God also claim that he has always existed.
No it isn't, that's a simplistic view. If you don't believe in a prime force you have to believe the universe has always existed. Doesn't the holder of that belief have to prove that belief

Furthermore it is pretty well accepted that the universe is 14 billion years old. It may well have had a starting point. If it began why.

There is lots of unanswered questions and you simply cannot rule out a creator.

To the question who created the creative force? I dunno, I don't even know if there is one.

My point being those who look down their noses at folks who believe in a god are essentially demonstrating how little they know about the universe that we inhabit.

A benevolent, interfering God isn't required and there is no evidence for that. There is enough unanswered questions to have an open mind about a creator.

And as I’ve said, nothing can be proved. You believe in a creative force, or god, or ScoobyDoo, or what you want, or however many different concepts you are trying to cover. You have to prove it, you can’t. Neither can I prove my belief there’s no such thing.

I ridicule many things, religion, god, creative force, ScoobyDoo or the state of Derby County, makes no difference.

The Op posed a question, I stated my thoughts, you’ve stated yours, neither of us will change, not sure why you are bothered tbh. We disagree, move on.

👍
I find it distasteful anyone who mocks someone's beliefs. What you think doesn't bother me. What people say does bother me.

No, all man made as is religion. I get why it was needed / created back in the day - few people could read or write, educational standards were close to zero for masses... they just couldn't figure stuff out so "magic" seemed a plausible solution.. the big con was when someone made themselves 'chief'

100%. It's utterly bizarre that people still persist in believing it in this day and age.
If religion didn't exist and somebody tried to invent it now, they'd be in a padded cell before long. Look at the way people mock Scientology and Mormonism. Why are they any more silly than the others??

No

At a very fundamental level I think the universe is itself an energy force that can serve to create if the right balance and ingredients are there, simply because the number of possibilities will at some point be realized.

Those that say a universe must come from somewhere - in their eyes a creator or God, are themselves unable to say where their God springs from - if a God can just 'be' why not the universe?

No, I want to believe so I can make sense of it all but no, my faith is not there.
I've seen too much, been through too much to accept that there is something looking out for me to make me feel I am loved and guided along the right path.
I feel we are nothing, we come into being and go back to what we once were.

I have been called worse than bizarre, good luck.

To be called bizarre because I have a different view to another seems quite bizarre to me. But each to their own .

I said earlier I thanked my God for my children, again bizarre.

Of course. When I say I feel we are temporarily separated i meant the conscious us rather than the physical. There is a bigger counciousness which is what is perceived as 'God' but really it is just the universe, not a man with a white beard watching us.

I remember having my mind blown as teenager when I picked up a book about quantum physics and reading about the double slit experiment. 30 plus years later and I'm still scratching my head at what it all means.

Oh my god, for heavens sake, what a question. Hell no. ;)

I don't criticise, for those that believe, but, I think that if there is a god, He/ She or It is doing a very poor job of looking over and caring for us.

He/ She or It has sat back and watched us throughout mankinds history, invade, kill, maim, rape and imprison and enslave one another and often in the name of god.
He/ She or It has also watched as we, to this day, are still doing this not only to mankind but to creatures that He/She/It created, and many to extinction.
He/ She or It is also sitting back just watching us destroy the planet, the home that He/ She /It created for us.

It's certainly not a god that I would have any faith in if there were to be one.

I'm a true sitter on the fence. In history various religions, churches, etc have done a lot of awful things. If I look at the medieval church it looks like a means of controlling the plebs while extorting money out of them, similar to today's politics. That said I do believe that in dark times having something to focus on is vital, but for me this could equally be family, friends, luck, fate or God depending on personal circumstances or beliefs.
