Do we have an unrealistic sense of "entitlement"?

The pervading trend of thought appears to be that we should be up there "challenging" for promotion or at least a play-off place.
Every season there is the expectation we will achieve.
We threaten almost every season to join the big league, but fail amid cries of "sack the Manager".
Are we really punching well above our weight?
Even the most recent adventure into the Premiership was at best "OK" and at worst "embarrassing".
One season in the Premiership in thirteen years.
We dont quite know "where we belong" - but there appears to be a strand of opinion which yells "top flight" as if we are entitled to be there.

A club who can afford to spend millions on players barely making the bench is a club where expectations can be higher than getting out of the relegation spots after almost 25% of the season has elapsed.

I think a lot of our fans would be happy if we played some decent football, players put a shift in and they could see what was supposed to be happening on the pitch. If there were 6 better teams, so be it. Tried, but not quite good enough.

What our fans don't like - apart from the above - is a manager who b*llsh*ts and makes out the fans are clueless. Creates a discord which is very hard to come back from.

Think there are a number of fans who are obsessed with the PL and can't accept we are nowhere near from being a perpetual member. But the majority just love the club unconditionally, and will be there long after the incumbent manager goes.

I’m surprised looking at that just how long we’ve actually been in the “top flight”. Take away the footballing side for a minute, unfortunately for the long term viability of the club it’s imperative to have a stint in the “ top flight” no matter how long.

Bang on

All fans do Roofie. Not just us. Just read messageboards of other clubs who are struggling. They are full of fans wanting (and demanding) so much more for their clubs

I think at the end of this season that the Riverside will have been PL for 50% of its existence. Maybe one more year before the balance tips towards the second tier.

What a joke.
Do I expect more than bottom three too right I do and anyone that doesn’t shouldn’t be at the club.

The problem is, if we eventually get promoted and the fans are united at finally getting where we want to be, the same fans who you're talking about will be shouting for the manager to be sacked and Gibson to sell because we're fighting PL relegation. It's just the nature of the majority of Boro fans who think they know better than people who are far more qualified than them.

Hope and expectation are two sides of the same coin. We hope to get promoted, we expect not to get relegated. If we EXPECT to get promoted that is unrealistic and you are probably going to be very cross. I'd like to see the club building a new long term structure which I believe we are doing with the new recruitment strategy. If you haven't the patience I suggest Prozac.

Ha ha yes like the ones that thought Agnew was good enough to manage a prem league side yes the same Agnew who is putting the cones out for Steve Bruce ( agsin)

I agree and in all for this But is wilder on board with this philosophy though that’s my only doubt.

How does loaning the likes Mowatt tie in with this vision surely we should be using the likes of Gibson and finch as subs in your version.

I'd love to meet one of those. I think they exist only in your head. I can't remember a single voice in favour of Agnew

There wasn't many people thought that. And I'm referring to the people who say we should be playing Hoppe, Forss, Gibson and Finch and Wilder should be sacked because he doesn't. I'd love to see them but I don't know if they're any good, I don't watch them every day like Wilder does.
