Djokovic v Kyrgios

I think it's just how he is and how he copes on court. Doesn't seem to put him off, often seems to fire him up if anything.

A lot of players probably feel the same as him, but have learnt to keep a lid on it. Apparently Federer was a right brat as a junior. It's (usually) a waste of energy and distracting. Most players want to remain utterly focused. But for a rare few it seems to work a bit.

I remember Sampras talking about playing doubles with McEnroe in Davis Cup and how he couldn't believe at one of the change of ends McEnroe was still chuntering to him about some line call that occured a few games previously 😂
I'd suggest his world ranking, and his lack of tournament wins compared to the talent he has, shows it's not been working too well for him.

I'd say that's far more to do with his lack of professionalism. He doesn't like training/practicing (prefers basketball) doesn't prepare properly (going to the pub before matches) and can't see him doing much on the conditioning and nutritional side of things. He also previously didn't even enter that many tournaments. He just hasn't taken tennis that seriously before.

All a far bigger impact than his moaning during matches. He did it v Tsitsipas and v Djokovic. Didn't affect his level of tennis. It's the least of his problems.

It’s nonsense to suggest it didn’t affect him today. You could see his level of play going down in direct relation to his moaning. Djokovic only had to keep up anything like his usual standard and let Kyrgios beat himself.

Kyrgios beat himself?

Strange, because all the experts seem to think he played a very high level match.

nonsense to suggest he beat himself today. Ridiculous in fact.

First set, complete focus from him. Won it.

If he’d kept that focus he’d be champion.

He got in his own head and blew it.

The above is OK, chuntering etc but when the commentator apologised several times for his language F*#k on at least three occasions he needs some sort of consequence.

Completely agree. He crosses the line a lot.

They've always cut players too much slack on behaviour (usually). Serena used to get away with loads albeit not swearing, McEnroe too obviously back in the day.

I kind of agree with this.

Kyrgios was facing a mountain to climb before the first shot was played, but that first set proved when he had 100% focus and didn't lose the plot at times he could handle Novak and even outplay him at times.

As soon as Novak turned up the heat, NK just started to lose the plot and although he played a very good match, this undoubtedly affected him and was a reason that his standard from the first set dropped.

As soon as your standard drops (even just a small %) against the likes of Novak, then you're in big trouble.

I never once thought Kyrgios would win purely because of his attitude. As soon as one little thing would go against him - line call, hawkeye, net drop etc, then he'd be close to losing his focus. And ultimately IMO that's his biggest downfall.

He has arguably the best serve in the world (probably second behind Isner...Raonic is up there too) but he also has the quality. He just lacks the discipline that is needed to win slams.

He's a tool and the longer he acts a tool, the longer he'll go without winning a slam. And that's a shame because he has so much talent and should have won multiple slams already (not including doubles), espeically when you see that Cilic has a slam to his name during this ridiculous tough era.

I thought it was the opposite. His level started dropping (and Djokovic's level improved) and it was only after that had already happened, that he started chuntering on to himself.
