dijksteel

A big Ugo type to partner Lenihan who can still play a bit and crash a few set piece headers in, and a Boateng type to offer some more physical prowess and protection in midfield would transform us I think

And a Haaland type forward too while your at it please ;)

There's pros and cons to both.

While I think AD is capable of a higher standard of play overall, I think he's also more prone to costly errors. That's not to say Smith is immune to them: no one is.

Smith is more consistent and I'd say has a bit more leadership and organizational ability. Defending is about playing as a unit after all, far more so than attacking.

Smith was constantly caught out with a long diagonal pass in behind him last season. He just doesn't have the pace to recover. He's in the team purely for his leadership qualities for me. Dijksteel does make the odd error but his pace often gets him out of it. Smith doesn't have that in his locker. Plus Dijksteel offers far more going forward, so for me I'd pick dijksteel every time over Smith.

Neither are of the standard required if we are to be at a top two team

The Teesside Haaland will be ready to lead the line in the 24/25 season I'm sure 👀

Although I agree at the long ball troubled Smith, that was as a consequence of Smith tucking in to protect the central two and allow Giles to bomb on, not him being caught out of position. he was exactly where Carrick wanted him to be.

Prefer Smith to djiksteel. People say djiksteel is comfortable with the ball. I mean I don't think he is a donkey or owt, but someone like hackney I would say is comfortable with the ball. He seems composed and unhurried in possession whereas djiksteel isn't.
Smith just more of a steady Eddie. I think they are both decent fullbacks. But if you are looking at areas where you can make a good team better right back could be one place to look at.

Felt that most of djiksteels best performances came as a centreback under Warnock.

Dijksteel has had nowhere near the amount of games that Smith has had, and played 10 games for us last season, as well as sub appearances.

Smith had settled spells at Stoke and Huddersfield where he gained experience where, I would imagine, there was little competition for his spot.

Dijksteel looked good under Wilder, with a settled run in the side he could do the same with Carrick, but we'd need a strong centre back alongside Lenihan. Smith gave great cover for McNair through his experience, particularly in the air at times, getting his body across the attacker when we were exposed.

I'd disagree, the occasions I'm thinking of are when he was slightly more advanced in our own half but still out wide.
