dijksteel

This is just a hunch but I thought the other day that he could move into midfield next season. I think right-sided defenders moving into midfield is all the rage after John Stones and Alexander-Arnold, and to my mind Dijksteel has always struck me as more of a defensive midfielder than a full back anyway. He can bring the ball out. Obviously he’s not as good as Stones, before anyone starts.

He is naturally a midfielder, but moved to RB at Charlton due to injuries IIRC.

Carrick is into his cutting-edge tactics, encouraging the lads to be brave on and off the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some tactical innovations in our game next season, especially with a full pre-season and a handful of signings.

Not sure Dijksteel could play in midfield with his back to the play or see the full 360. He's good when he's got everything in front of him but as soon as he gets turned, he's in trouble. Be interesting to see what happens with RB and whether he can win his place back. At the moment, still seems like Smith will be first choice. Ideally prefer us to buy someone who is a good footballer, comfortable in possession and the ball at their feet. If that happens, Dijksteel will likely be sold.

Smith and Dijksteel are both a booking waiting to happen unfortunately.

I actually quite like Dijksteel, however I would hope the RB position is an are that will be focused on this summer.

If not and we prioritise other positions then I would opt for Dijksteel, but we just have to accept the limitations. In an ideal world big Anf is our go to substitute, but we might not have the luxury of that in our budget.

Not for me. His main strength is driving forward dribbling with the ball, rather than passing, and given carricks tactics don't think he'd fit in one of the middle two. The two players you name check, their strongest attribute is their range of passing.

And defensively playing centre mid you have to be so much more aware positionally, continually checking shoulders etc, which I don't think is Dijksteels strong point

Tommy Smith has done a pretty solid job this season, seems though he is in the side for his leadership qualities over ability, Djiksteel is a much better option for me, going forward he is far superior, defensively he tends to lack a bit of concentration, but he does have pretty good athleticism, which really lets Smith down. My feeling is both Djiksteel & Bola will move on this season, mainly I think because of Woody's influence, he seems from what the players are coming out with, do most of the defensive coaching, and he's never fancied either of them.

Didnt Woodgate bring both Bola and Dijksteel to Boro in 2019?

Djjksteel rarely gets booked, that's part of his problems for me. He isn't ruthless or committed enough when it counts.

He's athletically superior to Smith no arguments there, technical elements to his game going forward are better too, but he doesn't really score or assist. He is a much worse defender than Smith.

The coach who everyone agrees has done an amazing job, and has developed players and brought their game on massively, doesn't seem to want to utilise him as first choice.

For their number of games for various reasons, Dijsteel, Bola and Clarke could easily be replaced in the squad. One experienced defender who can cover a couple of positions on a free and maybe a PL youth for the bench.

Our defence is poorer than our finishing position suggests IMHO, although the way we play will always leave them more exposed than other teams, so we have to accept that.

A big Ugo type to partner Lenihan who can still play a bit and crash a few set piece headers in, and a Boateng type to offer some more physical prowess and protection in midfield would transform us I think.

Agree with that and two good athletic full backs and we could be so much tighter at the back
