Did we pick the best candidate?

Personally, I like teams that try to impose themselves on the opposition, be they tikky takky like Pep's Barca or City or high energy teams like Klopp's.
If Wilder can bring his ideas and approach to fruition here then I think we'll be enjoyable to watch.
Too many mangers try to overthink the game and match or negate the opposition before a ball is kicked rather than trusting their approach and being able to adapt if it isn't working.
From what I've seen and read, Wilder and Knill will bring some identity to our football again.
Everyone likes that

It is hard to do though, that unless you have fast, fit and skilful players, compared to the league they're in. These players are normally in demand, and extremely expensive. Not sure we could afford a change to that, or whether our side could do that with a couple of minor additions?

I am not convinced.
I suppose I should give him a chance.
But I think Chris Wilder will have a lot more money to spend on new players.
And I think he will waste it.

Take a look at the attached. Doesn't exactly cry out "amazing players"
Clearly having a laugh!!

Guardiola was a cracking player - and one that Robbo was reportedly trying to attract to the Boro as one of our Galacticos! Ancelotti, Capelo and Conte all key players for Italy. Conte was quality!

Agreed that nobody could ever describe Zidane as ‘amazing’, but you’d have to admit that he had a certain way of playing!!!!

Howe?
Wilder?
Smith?
Lampard?
Gerrard?

There’s a good argument that Boro chose the most promising managerial candidate from the available pool.
Realistically could we have attracted any of them? They would have all been better options but probably unrealistic. Apart from Farke, Wilder is probably as good as we could expect

I've absolutely zero interest in Gerrard or Lampard. Also all the 'j*zzfest' that comes with it. It's almost like the players name is bigger than the club.

I actually think Howe is a decent appointment for the mags. I'd say a 'better' option than many of the bigger names mentioned.

I genuinely think in terms of getting us out of the champo then Wilder is the best option. He's almost judged on his final season at Sheff UTD (during a pandemic with no fans). Just remember he was the LMA manager of the year in 2019 (beating Pep) and was heavily linked with the Spurs/West Ham and Evertons of this world prior to his final season.

He's a a really top end manager who's been on nothing but an upward trend for 5-6 years (bar one season).

Just think if after being voted the LMA manager of the year two years ago a random Boro fan said to you 'he's coming to Boro in 2 years' you'd think he was on drugs😂

I think from that list we have we had two options, Lampard and Wilder. We'll soon know if it was the right one.

Was working with a big Northampton fan yesterday and he was raving about Wilder. Couldn’t speak highly enough of him.
He’s streets ahead of anyone else available.

Took Oxford up, back into the football league
Took Northampton up as champions
Took Sheff Utd from bottom of league 1 to top half Prem.

He’s streets ahead of anybody else on that list but because he cut his teeth promoting lower league unfashionable clubs, I wasn’t fully aware of just how good his young managerial career has been.
I think the club have got this one absolutely spot on!

The other 4 wouldn’t have come. All fancy themselves for PL jobs and to be honest, I’m surprised Wilder didn’t hold out for a Norwich-type club in the PL. Feel like it is a bit of a coup attracting him here and no wonder we moved.

We spoke about this at work last weekend. The pandemic definitely screwed Sheff Utd the old cliche that the fans can act as a twelfth man was definitely true when it came to their rise up the leagues. Fans can definitely give players that extra 10% that can make a difference to the outcome of games. See also Liverpool at home on a champions league night when the stakes are high.

I agree. Especially for a side like Sheff UTD who were flying on a crest of a wave and very much backed by a local fanbase. The Lane can be lively😂

Although you'd have to say the recruitment wasn't great in the second season. Although reading between the lines some of it wasn't Wilder (sound familiar). They also lost Henderson who was a big part of the success.

I think it effected all sides. Yet definitely some more than others.

Agree with both of those statements.

Wilder took Sheff Utd from 11th in League 1, to 1st, in his first season (100 points too), then came 10th in Champo, then 2nd, and then 9th in the Prem.
That's gaining 46 positions, in 4 years, incredible. In his three years in League 1 and the champo, they were 4m up in transfer fees.

They really spent poorly in the premiership mind (albeit it's probably not him doing the scouting and negotiating), but that just screams out they were just trying to get anything they could. Then the bad signings coupled with big injuries and a small squad meant they had no chance. Even they guy after him, did no better, and they had most of their injured players back.

Obviously they went down, after he left, but they still probably would have went down anyway, but look where they are now, 18th in the Champo! I'm sure they wouldn't have dropped so hard had he stayed.

He just seems to me like a very good manager, who will get the most out of his players, but will really need helping out in the transfer market (which is the job of the recruitment team). I just hope our recruitment team do a better job than his did at Sheff Utd.

If we can finish top 6/8 this year, then we can really push for next year.

It's a waste of time going all guns blazing for promotion this year, as the top three are just too strong, they're the three going up, no matter what.

I think we could be facing Norwich and Burnley next year, I just don't see how they stay up, and I think Burnley will sink like a stone afterwards.

Newcastle will be fine with Howe, and some money spent, and I think Watford finish 3rd bottom. But whoever finishes 3rd bottom, is going to bounce back up I think. The prem is Leeds/ Villas level, where as Watford, Burnley, Norwich have been punching above their weight for a while.

I honestly think this is the best appointment we’ve made in years, certainly since Karanka. It just has that feel about it. We needed a proven manager/coach to come in and we’ve definitely got that. I think Wilder will be a really excellent Boro manager. Something just ‘fits’, IMO. I think it’s a brilliant move.

I think it's a good move too. I remember thinking he would be a good manager for Boro to get when I was watching a profile of his progress a couple of years ago. It emphasised how good he was at getting the best from a player and how his staff looked up to him.

He’s also brought his team with him binned then token we had as “fitness coach” and made sure the foundations are right from minute one

I think he’ll prove to be a good choice and I’m pleased the club acted quickly although the way Warnock was pushed was disappointing. As a club we haven’t always been so astute. If you’ve looked back far enough you’ll know we turned down Bill Shankly before he transformed Liverpool. 😂
