Did Big Jack really invent 'pressing' in 1986?

He was such an innovator.
We had the fittest team in the old Div 1.
Players that came to us were properly put through their paces.
He had them down at the Gare and Marske running up and down sand dunes.
Watched us with him at the helm as a kid with enormous pride and awe.
They all dreaded coming to Ayresome. Fortress.
Ahhhh........... those were the days........

Erm
Bobby Mudoch
Alan Foggon
Frank Spraggon
we’re not what you’d call supremely fit
Foggon was quick over short distances but not really super fit

Always love this

Think he once said you have to have a good spine for a team ,hence 2 rock solid center Half's ,2 solid midfielders and a solid center forward

Jimmy Hedridge was trainer on that video.
My mate was an apprentice at Boro then.
He said before Jack came injured players were excused training and sat in medical room all day with newspapers picking out the horses. Medical room was always full.
Jack and Hedridge banned papers and injured players had to report to gym and work on every bit of body apart from injured area both morning and afternoon. Whereas non injured players only trained on a morning.
Obviously medical room soon cleared and players only went in when really injured.
Looked at the games nearly all of the squad played then.
I think 6 played all 42 games and 3 or 4 missed only 1 or 2 games. Basically we had a squad of 13 which included Brine or Smith as sub.

Today it’s called “pressing”
Jack Charlton called it “putting them under pressure”
My school sports teacher called it “getting in their faces”
It’s always been part of the game.
The Holgate at Ayresome called it get in to em and f u c k em up

Tommy Docherty was associated with the pressing game, especially at Man U. Previously, wingers weren't expected to track the full back.
